Charming one-woman show is fun, light piece of theater at OnStage

Looking for a light, fun piece of theater, with a touch of the holidays? “Sister Robert Anne’s Cabaret Class” fits that description.

Chula Vista’s Onstage Playhouse is producing this charming one-woman show.

Sister Robert Anne is played by Debbie David, who is a powerful singer and infuses the role with her sparkling personality.

As Sister Robert Anne instructs the audience in the art of producing a cabaret performance, she sings some of the most popular songs by the writer/composer/lyricist Dan Goggin.

Known for her Onstage Playhouse role as Patsy Cline in 2015’s successful run of “Always … Patsy Cline,” David is able to command the stage with her charm and energy. She provides us with the nun’s backstory of being a teen hoodlum in Brooklyn before she was sent to a Catholic-run reform school. It was there she received her calling.

Father Kirk, her piano accompanist, provides a delightful side to the show. Father Kirk is performed by Kirk Valles, who also doubles as the musical director. A few moments of audience participation adds to the intimacy of the show.

Kate Herwitt, as director, states that she has “a special place in her heart for all things nun.”

The pacing is on target and the cabaret format flows well. Chad Oakely is producer and also provides set and lighting design. The set has touches of Christmas, and two Christmas songs are included among the musical numbers. The audience left the theater at the end of the show with smiles.

Best known for his long-running off-Broadway “Nunsense,” Goggin bases his shows on his early experiences in school with the Dominican Sisters and his time as a seminarian.

The show runs through Saturday, Dec. 9. All tickets are $25.

Curtain times are 8 p.m. for this week’s final shows. The material is appropriate for all ages.

OnStage Playhouse is located at 291 Third Avenue in downtown Chula Vista. For details, visit the website at www.onstageplayhouse.org.

Snowfall at Village Walk at EastLake
Village Walk at EastLake is located at the intersection of Eastlake Parkway and Miller Drive in Chula Vista. Holiday events should make this a destination for many families.

The annual snowfall event, accompanied by choreographed music and lights, is a must visit holiday event for people of all ages. The free annual event transforms the shopping center’s courtyard into a snowy wonderland.

The magical snow will fall twice nightly at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. through Christmas Eve near the bridge over the koi pond.

Children receive free “magic” glasses to watch the snow falling in rainbow colors while caroling groups will entertain guests between the snowfalls.

The nightly snowfall is a popular backdrop for Christmas card photos and videos.

The new walk-in snow globe, which will be located near the children’s play area, offers another magical setting to take photos. The snow globe will be open on two Sundays: Dec. 10 and 11 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

All holiday events — the nightly magical snowfall and new snow globe experience — at Village Walk at EastLake are free. Watch a video of last year’s magical snowfall and learn more about the holiday events at www.shopvillagewalk.com.

The Old Globe Theatre is once again transformed into the snow-covered Whoville, right down to the last can of Who-hash.

The family favorite features the songs “Santa for a Day,” “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch,” and “Welcome, Christmas (Fah Who Doraze),” the delightful carol from the popular animated version of the story. Celebrate the holidays.
