BVHS hoop women are on the rise

The wins keep piling up for the high achieving Bonita Vista High School girls basketball team.

The Lady Barons topped visiting Eastlake, 65-60, on Monday to improve to 4-0 in Mesa League play. The win built on previous victories against Mater Dei Catholic (81-76 on Jan. 5), Montgomery (107-75 on Jan. 10) and Otay Ranch (67-25 last Friday).

The 4-0 league start has extended Bonita Vista’s season start to 16-5.

Monday’s win over the fifth-ranked Lady Titans (12-4) could very well catapult the Lady Barons into the San Diego Section’s weekly top 10 rankings.

It would seem to be deserving territory.

Bonita Vista has won nine of its last 10 games — the only loss being 92-77 at Liberty High School in Henderson, Nev., on Jan. 6.

The Lady Barons next take the court Friday, Jan. 19, at Hilltop as Mesa League play continues.

Shyla LaTone continues to pace the BVHS squad. She had 18 points in Monday’s win after scoring 32 points in the win over Otay Ranch, 57 points in the win over Montgomery and 50 points in the win over Mater Dei Catholic.

She had 38 points in the loss to Liberty — a tick below her season average of 37.5 points per game.

Anneth Grijalba earned player of the game honors in Monday’s high impact tilt by helping secure the win with 11 rebounds to go with seven assists and eight points.

There were other contributors, according to BVHS head coach Tristan Lamb.

“The Eastlake game is always a big rivalry,” Lamb said. “It was a battle but we came back to win at the end.

“At one point we were down 10 points. With 3:55 left, we were down by eight. We had to really battle. A couple of freshmen — Julia Cosalan and Keyanna McCoy — came up with big plays for us.”

Hoop-aholics
While school was out on Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the hoops session was on the court in the Lady Barons’ gym.

In two games at Monday’s Bonita Vista MLK Classic, Montgomery defeated Our Lady of Peace, 54-43, while Santa Fe Christian downed Lincoln, 50-25.

Our Lady of Peace also sent novice and junior varsity teams to participate in Monday’s MLK Classic at BVHS.

Kaleese Petties led Montgomery with 22 points while Destiny Gilkes dropped in 11 points. Gichelle Villar also tacked on 10 points in the win as the Lady Aztecs improved to 11-4 on the season.
