Buncom tabbed to play in Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl

The fourth annual Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl, secheduled Jan. 4 at the StubHub Center in Carson, is the culmination of a nationwide All-American player selection tour that collectively celebrates academic excellence, proven physical fitness and quality of character — values that parallel those of the Marine Corps.

Among the 99 players tabbed to participate in this year’s game is St. Augustine senior Frank Buncom IV, a South County resident.

Buncom is listed as a safety on the Team West roster. He finished the 2014 season as the Saints’ leading reciever with 38 catches for 515 yards and five touchdowns. He also led the team defensively with 68 total tackles.

St. Augustine finished 8-5 as the San Diego Section Division I champion after defeating the Madison Warhawks, 49-42, in the section finals Dec. 5 at Southwestern College.

Selection for the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl is a badge of honor and provides the opportunity to reward commitment to academic excellence and community leadership.

“I am most excited to have fun with the guys that I’m going to be playing with at the next level, and participating in a community service event should be a lot of fun,” Buncom said upon his arrival for the week’s festivities on Dec. 30.

Col. Robert G. Golden III, Chief of Staff, MCRC, said those players selected to compete in the game are “not just outstanding athletes.”

“These players were hand-picked from thousands across the country because these young leaders have also proven themselves academically and in their communities,” Golden explained.

The Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl is designed to be different than other bowls. The players selected to represent the eastern and western halves of the country were chosen not only because they are among the most talented players in the nation, but also because they bring something more to the game.

“The Semper Fidelis Football Program celebrates excellence,” Golden said. “By recognizing the hard work and dedication of these young players, we can interact with their friends, families and communities, celebrating the positive intangible qualities they share with Marines and developing quality citizens. America loves football. There’s no better way to recognize and promote excellence than with this bowl.”

The game will be telecast live on Fox Sports 1 from 6 to 9 p.n. PST.
