Building a broad business coalition

The South County Economic Development Council understands the importance and impact our proximity to Mexico has on our way of life in South County. The organization is building a proactive coalition to work on pertinent issues related to our bi-national status. With one region operating in two countries there are endless opportunities and possibilities to what can be accomplished working collectively.

The past two months have led to the development of a Bi-National Committee with the focus on collaboration, community building, and resource sharing. As we look to the launch of the new international trade agreement between the United States and our North American partners it remains paramount to build on the successes of the past. Open and regular communication will allow all parties to understand how we can work towards a united economic approach.
One of the first actions being undertaken by this newly formed committee is to help proactively design protocol for all involved to follow as we look to a phased re-opening of border crossings. The committee along with our economic development partners in Mexico are meeting to craft recommendations to be shared with our respective governments. This unified approach to responsibly easing restrictions is much like our local cities working to craft a path forward.

Over the coming months other important initiatives; the group will focus on including the Tijuana River, manufacturing corridor projects, and developing economic marketing materials as a region. The Bi-National Committee will help shape the international policy agenda of the South County Economic Development Council. Much like our Public Policy Committee this group will hear from multiple perspectives and assess what position should be recommended for support by the full board of directors.

The Bi-National Committee has participation from Economic Development Councils in Ensenada, Mexicali, Rosarito, Tecate, and Tijuana. With more than 50,000 cars and another 20,000 pedestrians crossing daily at the various ports of entry it is imperative to work together on continuing the strong economic driver of international trade. The combined entities will provide greater influence when vetting and promoting important initiatives and creating mutual benefit.

At the South County Economic Development Council, we are committed to providing the greatest level of support and resources for our region. Throughout the history of the SCEDC we have supported international projects such as the Cross Border Xpress and the new Otay Mesa Border Crossing.

Participation from all communities within the South County help us build the most encompassing and complete program of work. With outreach being at the core of what we do it is important we bring together the most diverse and committed group of community possible.
