Boost for SWC’s EMT students

American Medical Response, Inc., is partnering with Southwestern College to increase access to affordable Emergency Medical Technician degrees through a new scholarship. The AMR Diversity and Inclusion Scholarship provides 10 $1,000 scholarships to qualifying students.

“Expanding upon the diversity of the first-responder workforce so that EMT crews better reflect the diversity of the communities they serve is essential to all of us,” said Madeleine Baudoin Ghorashi, AMR San Diego. “The AMR Diversity and Inclusion Scholarship program is one way to accomplish this because it is designed to encourage members of diverse backgrounds to obtain an EMT degree.”

The new $1,000 tuition scholarships cover the full cost of tuition, books, and fees for the EMT program. Once the students successfully complete the EMT program they will be licensed to enter the workforce.

Training is held at SWC’s Higher Education Center at Otay Mesa. Southwestern College EMT & Paramedic Programs Director Jason Hums said the college has trained EMTs and paramedics for more than 30 years.

“We have continually tried to improve our programs. One of our initiatives is to serve more of the underrepresented populations here in the Chula Vista area,” he said.
