Bonita man has trial set for alleged threats

A Sept. 4 trial date has been set for a Bonita man who is accused of making a criminal threat during a SWAT stand-off after deputies tried to talk to him about a domestic violence incident.

James Shannon Gilbert, 38, pleaded not guilty to three charges when he appeared before a Chula Vista Superior Court judge in July. He remains in jail on $100,000 bail.
Judge Stephanie Sontag ordered him to stand trial for making a criminal threat, inflicting corporal injury to his girlfriend, and resisting an officer in the May 17 incident in the 4300 block of Allen School Lane in Bonita.

Gilbert’s girlfriend and a detective testified during the preliminary hearing. The domestic violence incident occurred on April 9, but Gilbert refused to come out of the house on May 17 to talk to sheriff’s deputies who had come to either talk or arrest him.

Deputies showed up at 10 a.m., but when Gilbert refused to come out of the house, the sheriff’s crisis negotiation team, ASTREA, and the Special Enforcement Detail responded.

They repeatedly urged him to surrender, which he did around 6 p.m.
He initially was arrested for allegedly brandishing a weapon during the SWAT standoff, but that offense was not filed against him afterwards.
