The Bonita Vista Barons continue to look like the strongest team among the six roller hockey squads competing in the CIF-Metro Conference’s short spring season after turning aside challenges from the Castle Park Trojans (12-3 win) and Otay Ranch Mustangs (13-3 win) last weekend at the Castle Park High School outdoor rink.

Adding the team’s latest two games on Saturday (May 8), the Barons have now outscored their opening four opponents 47-8 with one game remaining on the regular season schedule.

Bonita Vista is averaging nearly 12 goals per game on offense while allowing an average of two goals on defense.

The Barons’ “Three Amigos” – juniors Maxwell Anderson, Alvaro Ruiz and Diego Nunes – continue to set the pace offensively with a combined total of 40 goals and 20 assists for 60 points through four games.

Anderson picked up 16 more points (12 goals, four assists) in the team’s last two victories to keep him in the league’s top scoring position with 26 points (22 goals, four assists).  Ruiz (13 goals, four assists) and Nunes (five goals, 12 assists) are tied for second in league scoring with 17 points apiece.

Also chipping in with points in the all-around team victories against the Trojans and Mustangs were junior Keala Nunes (two goals, one assist), freshman Andrew Madrigal (one goal, one assist) and sophomore Noah Burke (one goal).

“I’m thrilled about the more balance on the team,” veteran BVHS coach Keith Quigley said. “Obviously, Max is doing very well. But now we also have Alvaro, Diego, Andrew, a ninth grader, and Keala – it’s nice to have everyone contributing.”

Anderson scored the game’s opening five goals — the first two while shorthanded — to stake the Barons to a 5-0 first-period edge against Castle Park (0-4). Diego Nunes (three goals, one assist) and Ruiz (two goals, two assists) each collected four points in the win while Keala Nunes chipped in with a goal and assist.

Anderson finished the game with seven points — six goals and one assist.

Josh Barreto scored all three goals for the Trojans to give him eight tallies in three games.

Anderson also registered the game’s opening give goals in the ensuing game against Otay Ranch en route to posting a nine-point showing with six goals and three assists.

Eastlake wraps up perfect weekend
The Titans swept both of their games to cap the second weekend of play, downing Castle Park by a score of 10-1 in the opening game of the day and then following that up with a 5-4 cliff-hanger win over the San Ysidro Cougars (0-3) in one of the more intriguing games played thus far in the short spring season.

The Titans used a strong finish to slip past San Ysidro in its second of back-to-back games after the Cougars opened up a 2-1 advantage through the first period.

Eagles staked the Titans to an early 1-0 lead but Alejandro Vargas roared on the court with the next two goals, both assisted by Angel Bernal. Eagles beat San Ysidro goaltender Mariano Mercado with consecutive goals to start the second period to enable Eastlake to take a 3-2 lead. But Bernal responded with two goals of his own to put the Cougars back in front by a score of 4-3 early in the third period.

Navarette tied the game, 4-4, with 3:35 to play in regulation, assisted by Eagles and Navarertte scored on a deflection with 1:57 to stand up as the game-winning goal.

Mercado stopped 17 of 18 shots in the first period to allow San Ysidro to skate to a strong start. He stopped 16 of 18 shots in the second period and made 14 of 16 stops in the third period for a game total of 47 stops.
