A mental competency hearing is set for Jan. 29 for a man charged with carjacking two vehicles in Otay Mesa and crashing one of them near a freeway on-ramp.
The attorney for Daniel Ryan Perez, 33, told a San Diego Superior Court judge he doubted his client was mentally competent to understand court proceedings so the judge suspended criminal proceedings.

A psychiatrist was appointed to evaluate Perez in jail and send a report for the Jan. 29 hearing. Perez remains in the central jail without bail.

Perez is suspected of carjacking two cars on Sept. 21, 2017. He got inside one vehicle and reached for his waistband, which implied he had a weapon, said Lt. Andrew Hoffman of San Diego Police.
