A Capitol time to move on

When I was in middle school I dreamed of living on the East Coast. I hoped that one day I could have a job as a journalist in New York City or Washington D.C.  My parents laughed it off; they called me crazy and a dreamer.

As a sophomore in high school, I was one of 50 students selected for an all-expense-paid trip to Washington D.C.  I fell in love with its beauty and lifestyle; I vowed to return to work there.

My dream from about 15 years ago is coming somewhat true. On May 30 I am packing my bags and flying to Washington D.C. I was selected by the National Association of Hispanic Journalists for a summer internship at a Spanish-language newspaper.

So I will be living on Capitol Hill for the entire summer, working as a journalist and living the lifestyle.  Just like in my dreams.

As part of my internship assignment, I will be flown to Denver, Colo., for a week in June to be part of a Latino journalists conference where I will be paired with a professional journalist to complete writing assignments.

I don’t know what to expect of the next few months of my life but I am ready for the new challenges and growing experiences, just like I had at The Star-News.

For the past four months I held a writing internship at The Star-News, and I had the opportunity to learn about journalism at the professional level. This is priceless for a student journalist hoping to make it in the field.

During my short stint at The Star-News I fulfilled my personal goals, I wanted to write and improve my journalism skills and that’s what I did. I stepped up to story assignments because in every challenge there is growth.

I am leaving better prepared for the journalism field. I have learned to ask the right questions, to be persistent and to make it happen.

Thanks to everybody at The Star-News.
