Slam dunk! Barons win battle of the hoop

Bonita Vista and Eastlake high schools have been rivals since the 1990s. The schools’ annual Battle for the Boot football game has become the stuff of legend. Basketball may not be too far behind: call it the Battle for the Hoop.

The host Barons won this year’s matchup 70-48 behind a monstrous offensive showcase that included three slam dunks and 10 three-point shots.

Senior Adam Mitchell got the capacity crowd roaring with a two-handed slam to hand Bonita Vista an early 10-2 lead. Junior Jerry Stokes successfully defended a slam attempt by the visiting Titans and then followed with his own dunk to send the home fans into hysterics. The Barons led 25-9 after the first quarter.

The BV lead increased to 31-13, then 44-26 at halftime thanks to eight treys in the first half.

Mitchell stoked the crowd with a second slam in the second half and the hosts went on cruise control.

Mitchell had13 points and seven rebounds, though senior Oshen Pena was the shooting star with six treys for 18 points. Stokes tacked on 15 points.

The Barons, who finished runner-up in the Frank Pekarek National City Host Lions tournament prior to the holiday break, entered last Friday’s game red hot after winning the Aztec New Year’s Classic with a 4-0 showing: 84-69 over Imperial, 61-57 over Monte Vista, 76-54 over Steele Canyon and 68-37 over Calexico in the championship game.

Last Friday’s win over Eastlake added to the Barons’ strong start to the new year.

“We had some competitive games,” said Bonita Vista head coach Stevon Dean Curry, whose team improved to 16-6 on the season following Saturday’s 87-71 non-league at the San Diego Cavers. “It was a test to set us up for the second half of the season.

“Our goal is to win the Division I championship. We want to keep growing as a team. We have great team chemisty. We want to see each other succeed.”

Mitchell, whose prowess on the boards speaks for itself, confessed it wasn’t the team’s best game. “We’re only at 50 to 70 percent of our potential,” he said. “The energy in the gym was incredible. Any time you have a crosstown rivalry, it makes for an amazing setting.”

Stokes joined the program’s career 1,000-point club and was awarded his own banner after the game. “It’s a great achievement but I couldn’t have done it without all my teammates,” he said.
