This year’s San Diego Section soccer playoff brackets featured 24 South County teams — 12 each on both the boys and girls sides.
Four teams were left standing entering this week’s semifinals — the Metro-Mesa League champion Red Devils in the boys Division I bracket, second-seeded Otay Ranch in the Division II girls bracket, second-seeded Montgomery in the Division IV girls bracket and fourth-seeded Mar Vista in the Division V girls bracket.
Second-seeded Sweetwater defeated sixth-seeded Westview, 3-0, to advance to Saturday’s Division I championship game against fifth-seeded Point Loma. Kick-off is 5 p.m. at Torrey Pines High School.
Senior Marco Santillan led the National City team with three goals in Wednesday’s game, including two goals in the first half and a third in the second half.
“This season was a roller coaster,” SuHi head coach Diego Espinoza said. “We started strong being finalist in the Francis Parker tournament but then lost three consecutive games to lower division opponents over Christmas week.
“We managed to pick up form before league started to win the banner in the Mesa League and are carrying that momentum into playoffs. We’ve turned a team full of talent and egos to a family that fights for one another every second of each game. I hate making predictions, but I have full confidence that this team will leave it all on the field this Saturday.”
The Red Devils (11-8-3) received a bye in the opening round before toppling seventh-seeded Carlsbad, 2-1, last Saturday in the quarterfinals. Host Sweetwater scored first and later snapped a 1-1 tie. Junior Marvin Carrillo scored both goals for the Devils.
Westview upset third-seeded Southwest, 1-0 in the quarterfinals.
Metro-Mesa League runner-up Eastlake received the No. 4 seed in the Open Division but lost, 2-1, to fifth-seeded Poway in its opening match in the quarterfinals.
Four local teams qualified for the Division II playoffs, including three from the Metro-South Bay League, and all three advanced with opening wins.
Chula Vista, the South Bay League runner-up, received the No. 8 seed and defeated No. 9 seed Montgomery, 2-1, on a second-half goal to snap a 1-1 deadlock.
Chula Vista could not advance after that following a 3-0 loss to top-seeded La Costa Canyon in the quarterfinals.
Metro-South Bay League champion Hilltop received the No. 3 seed and a bye in the first round. The Lancers edged sixth-seeded Fallbrook in the quarterfinals on goals but ended its playoff run following a 1-0 setback to second-seeded Steele Canyon in a rematch of last year’s Division III final.
San Ysidro collected the No. 7 seed and topped 10th-seeded San Marcos, 2-0, in the opening round before ending its season with a 3-1 loss to Steele Canyon in the quarterfinals.
Mater Dei Catholic received the No. 12 seed in the Division III bracket while Metro-Pacific League champion Bonita Vista receive the No. 6 seed.
Mater Dei Catholic lost, 5-0, to fifth-seeded Mt. Carmel while Bonita Vista dispatched 11th-seeded Orange Glen in the first round in its new on-campus stadium to advance to the quarterfinals. But the Barons lost, 3-0, in the next round to third-seeded Bishop’s to end their season prematurely.
Otay Ranch received the No. 9 seed in the Division IV bracket but lost, 2-1, to eighth-seeded Mission Bay in the opening round.
Mar Vista (eighth seed) and Bayfront Charter (10th seed) both gained admittance to the Division V playoffs. Mar Vista doubled up ninth-seeded Victory Christian Academy in its first match but lost, 2-0, to top-seeded Preuss UCSD in its next match.
Bayfront Charter lost, 1-0, to seventh-seeded Health Sciences in its first match.
Otay Ranch received the No. 2 seed in the Division II girls bracket and shut out 10th-seeded Santana in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals against third-seeded Patrick Henry. The Lady Mustangs could not advance after being shut out, 2-0, by the Lady Patriots.
Montgomery received the No. 2 seed in the Division IV girls bracket and won its opening quarterfinal game, 6-5, over seventh-seeded Calexico to advance to Wednesday’s semifinals against sixth-seeded High Tech High San Diego, with HTH advancing to Friday’s division championship game with a 1-0 win.
Mar Vista, seeded fourth in the Division V girls field, defeated fifth-seeded High Tech High North County, 2-1 in penalty kicks in the quarterfinals to advance against top-seeded Madison in the semifinals but stalled there with a 2-0 loss.
Bonita Vista (fourth seed) and Eastlake (seventh seed) both made the Open Division quarterfinals but neither advanced — the Lady Barons lost, 1-0, by fifth-seeded San Marcos while the Lady Titans lost, 4-0, to second-seeded Cathedral Catholic.
Mater Dei Catholic (seeded third in Division I), Olympian (seeded ninth in Division II), Chula Vista Learning Community Charter (12th seed in Division III), Hilltop (10th seed in Division III), Chula Vista (eighth seed in Division IV), Sweetwater (fourth seed in Division IV) and Castle Park (12th seed in Division V) all dropped their opening playoff matches to suffer elimination.
