The May 18 , 2018 edition of The Star-News featured an interview of two of Chula Vistas most prominent candidates for mayor; Current Mayor Mary Salas, and Otay Mesa Water board official, Hector Gastelum.

Both candidates seemed to agree on supporting and completing the Bayfront project.

However, the candidates differ widely in their opinions on how to manage the city’s homeless problem, Salas endorsing compassionate outreach, Gastelum suggesting the Vagrancy Act of 1824 should be enforced, and panhandlers jailed. On the topic immigration, Mayor Salas, who’s adminstration designated Chula Vista as a ‘ Welcoming City, recognizes the need for all citizens to feel comfortable and safe, especially when dealing with law enforcement. Gastelum promises to rescind Chula Vistas ‘ Welcoming City’ status on ‘day one’ of being elected. He will make sure local law enforcement cooperates with ICE. Salas is addressing Chula Vista’s homeless and immigration issue with foresight and compassion. Gastelum is taking a much harsher stance, basically endorsing ridding the community of these types of people, homeless and immigrants, many of whom are our neighbors, and even our friends.

Salas has always conducted herself with dignity, setting a wonderful example for children, especially girls, and representing Chula Vista in a way we can all be proud of. Can Hector Gastelum be counted on to do the same?
