2010 high school cross country season steps off

The 2010 high school cross country season stepped off Sept. 4 as runners from around the San Diego Section put their best foot forward at the Vaquero Stampede at Lindo Lake. South County harriers turned in a showcase performance.

Among the highlights:

Chula Vista junior Mariza Diaz won the 95-deep Division 1 junior/senior girls race with a time of 9:58 on the 1.65-mile course. Overall, six Metro Conference runners finished among the top six placers: Eastlake seniors Ana Gonzalez (10:13) and Savannah Scooler (10:25) were fourth and fifth, respectively, while Eastlake senior Olivia Daivs (10:26) was seventh, Chula Vista junior Cynthia Ruffin (10:28) was eighth and Eastlake junior Carly Hintz (10:29) was ninth. The Titans finished first among entered teams in the division with 37 points — nearly double that of runner-up University City (67 points). The Spartans were third with 79 points.

Eastlake senior Trent Warran placed fourth in the Division 1 junior/senior boys race with a time of 10:54 for 2.15 miles. Chula Vista senior Michel Robles was eighth in the same race in 11:16. The Spartans finished fourth in the team depth chart — 24 points ahead of the sixth-place Titans.

Mar Vista junior Karley Tena was third in the Division 2 girls junior/senior race, timing 10:14 for 1.65 miles.

San Ysidro senior Carla Hernandez captured the top time in the Division 3 junior/senior girls race in 10:40.
