Church makes way for affordable housing

The Phair Company, one of Eastlake’s developers in the 1980s, is now creating affordable housing in western Chula Vista.

Monterey Place, which will be at 267 E. Oxford St., will be the site of 23 single-family homes.

“We’re always looking for opportunities to build quality housing, especially for young families,” said developer Jeff Phair. “In Chula Vista, as in most communities, being able to build housing for entry-level first- time buyers is very difficult.”

Monterey Place homes will be on 5,000-square-foot lots, big enough for a pool or large backyard, Phair said. Phair said Monterey Place would serve as a contrast from most new residential development in the South Bay that is either two- and three-bedroom apartments or condominiums or zero lot line houses on small 2,500-square-foot lots. The two-story, housing development will consist of four-and-five-bedrooms with a second master bedroom downstairs, a feature Phair said is much needed in Chula Vista.

With its recent growth, Concordia Lutheran Church has a new location in the Winding Walk area of Chula Vista.
