Shot man gets burglary trial

A would-be burglar who was shot by a Paradise Hills homeowner has been ordered to stand trial for attempted residential burglary and committing felony vandalism of the home’s glass security door.

The trial date of Jordan Ramos Diaz, 25, has been set for Feb. 8 in San Diego Superior Court. Ramos was wounded in the shoulder in the Oct. 30 incident that happened at 3 a.m. in Paradise Hills.

The homeowner did not know the defendant who caused a disturbance in the early morning hours, said Deputy District Attorney Miriam Hemming on Jan. 15. She said Ramos yelled

“I’m going to break in” and began pounding on the front door repeatedly.
Hemming said Ramos shattered the glass security door, inflicting over $400 worth of damage which upgrades the charge to a felony. The glass was apparently shattered with rocks from a nearby flowerbed.

Homeowner Michael Santana testified at a Dec. 21 preliminary hearing that he fired a shot through the door in self-defense. He called San Diego Police. Officers found him nearby and took him to a hospital.

Ramos wore hospital pajamas when he was arraigned Nov. 2. Hospital security officers had taken him to court to be arraigned. He has since been transferred to the George Bailey Detention Facility on $105,000 bail.He has pleaded not guilty.
