Judge sets near Hallow’s Eve sentencing

Two men who were convicted of second-degree murder in the shooting death of Josue Crook outside a National City restaurant in 2014 got their sentencing delayed until Oct. 30.

The jury deliberated 18 hours over four days before convicting Daniel Arce Gonzalez, 37, and Salvador Oswaldo Chavez, 38, on June 18 in Chula Vista Superior Court. Crook, 36, of National City, was shot June 17, 2014 following an argument between people watching the 2014 World Cup soccer match between Mexico and Brazil.

The attorneys for both men are expected to file a motion for a new trial. Both men remain in jail. Prosecutor Melissa Diaz said Gonzalez and Chavez face prison terms of 25 years to life and 15 years to life respectively.

The jury also convicted Chavez of stabbing another person outside the Rincon del Mar on Highland Avenue. Gonzalez was also convicted of felony assault.

A fight broke out among people outside the restaurant and was already in progress when Crook stepped outside. A witness said Gonzalez was seen pointing the gun at another man before shooting Crook twice.
