California District 42 Little League is in the middle of its annual Tournament of Champions and all-stars tournament competitions. It’s an exciting time, according to district administrator Ernie Lucero.
“After 18 years of being in the role of district administrator, it never ceases to amaze me how the Little League community comes together and works to make these games a great success,” he said. “I liken the effort to a symphony, where all parties do their part to create unforgettable moments in kids’ lives.”
Even though the bulk of the competition is still ahead, there’s a lot going on right now. The tournament of champions competition features six divisions: 6U, 7U, 8U, 9U, Minor and Major, plus the three older all-stars divisions.
TOC semifinals and championship games start Thursday at Imperial Beach Little League and conclude Monday and Tuesday at the same site.
Semifinal games in the 6U division are scheduled Thursday at 5 p.m. The two games will pit Sweetwater Valley against Park View and Imperial Beach against Eastlake. The 6U final is scheduled Saturday at 3 p.m.
Semifinal games in the 7U division are Friday at 6 p.m. Tops seeds include Park View, Sweetwater Valley, Eastlake and Imperial Beach. The championship game is Monday at 6 p.m.
Semifinals games in the 8U division are Saturday at 9 a.m. (Park View versus Eastlake) and noon (South Bay versus Sweetwater Valley). The Final is Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Semifinal games in the 9U division are Thursday at 5 p.m. Sweetwater Valley will pair with Eastlake while South Bay and Park View will duel in the other contest. The championship game is Saturday at 6 p.m.
Semifinals in the Minor Division are Saturday at 9 a.m. (Park View versus South Bay)) and noon (Sweetwater Valley versus Eastlake), The final is scheduled Monday at 6 p.m.
Semifinals in the Major division are Saturday at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Eastlake will play the winner of Thursday’s game between Luckie Waller and Chula Vista American at 3 p.m. while South Bay will play the winner between Park View and Sweetwater Valley at 6 p.m. The championship game is Tuesday at 6 p.m.
The three upper-age all-stars divisions are also wrapping up play this weekend to provide a head start on the marquee 10U, 11U and 12U divisions. The Intermediate, Junior and Senior division championship game are scheduled Saturday at Park View Little League. Any double-elimination games are set for Tuesday. Saturday’s finals are set for 9 a.m. (Intermediate), noon (Junior) and 3 p.m. (Senior).
“It’s heartwarming to see kids start Little League in the 6U Division, and years later see them participate in the older divisions,” Lucero said. “I’m happy to say that his year we branched out and held games after a very long time at Luckie Waller and Southwest Little Leagues. A big thank you goes to Luckie Waller President Michael Cortez, Southwest President Joey Gonzalez, and their staff volunteers for offering up their fields and hosting.”
All-Stars tournament championship games in the Intermediate, Junior and Senior divisions will take place Saturday at Park View Little League starting at 9 a.m. and continuing throughout the day.
“At this point in their Little League journey, I’m hopeful these young teens will continue playing ball after Little League,” Lucero noted in terms of participation in older age divisions. “Some will go on as players for their school, and others are now serving as umpires for District 42 tournaments.”
All-stars competition in the younger age divisions start June 27.
