After-School success: San Diego’s Power Hour builds confidence and skills

When the school day ends, the learning doesn’t have to stop. The San Diego Boys & Girls Clubs’ Power Hour program offers students a structured, supportive space to complete homework, get academic guidance, and strengthen their confidence in the classroom.

“Power Hour started as a way to give students a safe and welcoming environment where they can focus on schoolwork while feeling supported,” said President/CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of South County Stephanie James. “We want to share with the Native community that education can be a beautiful and fulfilling experience.”

Power Hour provides dedicated homework time under the supervision of caring mentors and staff. Students receive guidance and resources tailored to their unique needs, encompassing reading, math, and problem-solving skills.

“It’s more than homework help — it’s about fostering confidence, responsibility, and long-term academic success,” James said.

“By focusing on understanding rather than just completing assignments, the program ensures participants are better prepared for challenges in the classroom.”

The program serves students across age groups. Younger members receive hands-on guidance, while older students receive support tailored to more advanced coursework.

Power Hour connects students to cultural and community opportunities. For example, participants can learn about Southwestern College’s Native American learning community, Haw Kemyulk, which offers linked classes, cultural events, and a Native American graduation ceremony.

“Young people can learn aspects of Native American cultures through the MC’s words,” James said, underscoring the program’s educational reach
