The Southwestern College football team extended its record to 6-0 to remain unbeaten on the season following last Saturday’s 48-13 American Mountain Conference victory against the visiting Victor Valley Rams.

“It was a great win for us,” SWC head coach Ed Carberry explained. “We traditionally play a super tight game but we exploded on them from the opening kickoff.”

“We have had numerous close games against the Rams and felt we were going to have more of the same. To our surprise we came away with a large margin of victory.”

The tone of the game was set right from the kick-off. Souhthwestern’s coverage sat 10 Jags in on the tackle led by Bonita Vista HIgh School product Ethan Willliams. The Jaguars made the opening hit en masse.

The very next play Zyair Velasquez (Hoover) threw a monster hit on the Victory Valley ball-carrier that forced a fumble into the air that Velasquez caught and ran back to the seven-yard line.

Two plays later Tajon Mondy (Lincoln) ran the ball into the end zone on a sweep.

There was much more to come.

Joe Joe Hudson (St. Augustine) completed four touchdown passes while Tajon Mondy (Lincoln) had three key catches for 73 yards and one touchdown to lead the Jaguars offensively.

Donnell Pleasant (Lincoln) led Southwestern with eight tackles in the game. Overall, SWC’s defense recorded five sacks and grabbed three interceptions.

On special teams, freshman punter Michael Brown bounced back from a rugged outing against Citrus to dominate field position against the Rams.

Carberry noted that freshman offensive right tackle Jose Nava (Chula Vista) played his best game of the season.

The Jags built a 35-0 lead in the game.

Hudson’s TD passes went to Jay Hartley (four yards), Ryan Stokes (43 yards), Rasheed Farha (seven yards) and Mondy (20 yards). Hudson finished the night with 204 passing yards and rushed six times for 35 yards.

Pleasant scored on a four-yard run while Mike Glass rushed for a two-yard touchdown. Glass (160 passing yards) also threw a 50-yard scoring pass to Patrick JeanCharles.

Stokes had four receptions for 116 yards while Davin Reynolds had six catches for 61 yards.

Aeden Johnson was successful on six of seven PAT conversions. He averaged 56.9 yards on eight kickoffs. Brown had five punts for a 32.8-yard average, including one inside the opponent’s 20-yard line.

Isaiah Strayhorn (Eastlake) had two kickoff returns for 41 yards while Ethan Williams (Bonita Vista) returned one kickoff 39 yards.

J.J. Dallas, Manny Machado and Hayden Herrington each received credit for interceptions. Machado returned his pick 28 yards.

Farha had 1.5 sacks, one quarterback hit and 2.5 tackles for losses on defense to go with five tackles.

The hosts finished the night with 370 net passing yards and 100 net rushing yards. The Rams totaled 266 yards in total net offense.

Sam Taylor led Victor Valley (3-3) with 186 passing yards while Sean White rushed for 103 yards.

The Jaguars next host Mt. San Jacinto College on Saturday, Oct. 22, at 6 p.m. The Eagles are 3-3 on the season, 0-1 in conference play following last week’s 30-13 loss at College of the Desert.
