A new daily ferry service will connect all the attractions of downtown San Diego to the doorstep of a new mega-resort in Chula Vista, beginning June 1.
Flagship Cruises & Events will run hourly shuttles between downtown’s Fifth Avenue Landing (bayside of the San Diego Convention Center) and Safe Harbor Marina South Bay (near the new Gaylord Pacific Resort & Convention Center).
A one-way fare will be $15, making the roundtrip $30.
“This new route creates another unique and enjoyable way to experience San Diego Bay while improving connectivity between Chula Vista and downtown San Diego,” said Flagship Cruises & Events President Brad Engel.
The ride is expected to take 45 minutes each way. The first ferry will leave Chula Vista every morning at 8 a.m. Departures will run at the top of the hour, with the next ferry leaving downtown at 9 a.m.
The last ferry of the day will leave Fifth Avenue Landing at 7 p.m.
Downtowners will have a chance to travel car-free to Gaylord and its highly popular pool complex. FYI: Day passes to the pool are just $12.50, but they sell out seven days in advance.
Also proximal to the Safe Harbor Marina South Bay are: The Living Coast Discovery Center in to he San Diego Bay National Wildlife Refuge; Sun Outdoors San Diego Bay RV Resort; and Seven Mile Casino.
Of course, downtown’s Fifth Avenue Landing is steps away from the world-class outdoor music venue The Rady Shell, and proximal to San Diego Padres games at Petco Park, the Gaslamp Quarter and all of 92101’s urban offerings.
When Comic-Con International comes to downtown from July 23 to 26, a good percentage of the 135,000 convention attendees could book a room at the Gaylord and ferry to the downtown convention center.
Be prepared to see Spider-Man, Wonder Woman, Star Wars Stormtroopers and cosplayers from all galaxies arriving at Comic-Con by boat.
