Youth to be served at Sweetwater track meet Phillip Brents | Fri, May 06 2011 11:52 PM

On Saturday, May 7, more than 600 students from the National and Sweetwater school districts will compete in various track and field events at Sweetwater High School. The meet, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., is open to all students in grades 1-8 within the two districts and qualifying students will continue on to the Southern Municipal Athletic Federation’s (SCMAF) State Meet on June 5 in Downey.

Students will compete in a variety of track and field events such as the 50-, 100-, 200-, 400-meter dashes, 800 and 1,600 runs, long jump and softball throw (which simulates the shot-put throw).

The event ties into After-School All-Stars Sports as Hook program, which guides students toward a more active lifestyle combined with healthy eating choices.

Founded by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1992, After-School All-Stars is the leading national provider of high quality, comprehensive, school-based after-school programs that include independent learning, academics and enrichment. The organization’s mission is to keep children safe and help them achieve in school and in life.  More than 80,000 at-risk youth benefit from these programs in 12 U.S. cities, including the San Diego region.
