USA Triathlon Junior and Youth Nationals to be held Aug. 6-7 along Chula Vista harborfront Press Release | Sat, Jul 30 2011 03:20 PM

The USA Triathlon Junior and Youth National Championship, which will feature athletes ranging from first-timers to the nation’s top up-and-coming multi-sport stars, returns to San Diego on Aug. 6-7 at the Chula Vista harborfront.

A full slate of races is set for Aug. 6, beginning at 7:30 a.m. The draft-legal Junior Elite (ages 13-15) and Youth Elite (ages 16-19) national championships will kick things off followed by age group championships for ages 7-8, 9-10, 11-12 and 13-15. The competitive distances range from a 100-meter swim, a five-kilometer bike and a  one- kilometer run for ages 7-10, to a 750-meter swim, 20K bike and 5K run sprint-distance event for the Junior Elites.

For the second consecutive year, a draft-legal team relay will be held on Aug. 7 at 8 a.m. for athletes ages 13-19. All athletes — in teams of three with at least one female competitor — will complete a 250-meter swim, a 5K bike and a 2K run.

In all, nearly 500 athletes and more than 40 relay teams are expected to compete in the 13 events. Visit www.usatriathlon.org for more information on the event.

“We are looking forward to another successful event in the Chula Vista area,” said USA Triathlon National Events Director Jeff Dyrek. “These athletes represent the future of our sport, and we’re thrilled to provide them with the opportunity to compete in one of the United States’ top multisport communities.”

The youth demographic (ages 7-17) is the fastest growing segment of USA Triathlon’s annual membership. At the end of the 2010 calendar year, USA Triathlon featured 32,562 youth members who comprised 24 percent of the organization’s total membership.

Founded in 1982, USA Triathlon serves as the national governing body for triathlon — one of the fastest growing sports in the world — as well as duathlon, aquathlon, aquabike, winter triathlon and paratriathlon in the United States.

USA Triathlon sanctions 3,500 races and connects with more than 140,000 members each year, making it the largest multi-sport organization in the world. Besides its work with athletes, coaches and race directors on the grassroots level, USA Triathlon provides leadership and support to elite athletes competing at international events, including ITU World Championships, Pan American Games and the Summer Olympic Games.

USA Triathlon is a member of the International Triathlon Union and the United States Olympic Committee.
