Titans end season on rush, qualify for Open Division playoffs

The Eastlake Titans ended the season with three consecutive wins to even their season record at 5-5 and secure second place in the Metro-Mesa League standings with a 3-1 league record.

The late season flourish bumped the team up to the San Diego Section’s elite eight Open Division playoffs. The seventh-seeded Titans will  face second-seeded St. Augustine (8-2) in quarterfinal-round action on Nov. 20.

St. Augustine defeated Eastlake, 46-9, in a non-league game Sept. 25 at Mesa College.

The Titans pounded visiting Chula Vista (0-4 in league, 1-9 overall) by a score of 42-17 last Friday as Kaleb Dueitt scored two touchdowns (one rushing and one receiving) and Traylon Reed rushed for 157 yards.

Jax Crawford and Jae Vitin also scored rushing TDs while Josh Olave snared a scoring pass.

“We have had a great season,” EHS head coach Lee Price noted. “We’ve lost to the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 teams in the Open Division.  Our other loses are to the No. 1 team in the Southern Section and the No. 1 team in Division III.  Our kids have stuck together and are working harder than ever to beat Saint Augustine. We’re healthier now than we were when we played them last time and we’re hoping this makes a difference. We’re looking forward to the big challenge in front of us and we’re proud to represent the South Bay in the toughest division in football.”

Eagles take flight

In a Division I opening-round playoff game on Friday, 11th-seeded Olympian (5-5) plays at sixth-seeded Torrey Pines (3-7) after the Eagles ended regular season play last week with a 9-3 non-league loss to visiting Santa Fe Christian. Ralphie Gomez kicked a 24-yard field goal for Olympian, which has lost four straight.
