Titan kickers rally to force OT, fall in PK tiebreaker to exit CIF boys soccer playoffs Phillip Brents | Wed, Mar 05 2014 10:36 PM

The Eastlake High School boys soccer team appeared to be following in the footsteps of the school's history-making girls team of a season ago by advancing to Wednesday's semifinals of the San Diego Section Division III playoffs.

The Titans – boasting a solid 14-6-4 record and a 2-0 quarterfinal-round elimination victory against seventh-seeded Pacific Ridge just four days earlier – were within one victory of advancing to Saturday's division championship game at Clairemont High School.

Eastlake's girls team won last year's Division I championship title and advanced as afar as the Southern California regional semifinals before finally ending its season. Could the Titan boys do likewise?

It was an uphill battle against the third-seeded Fallbrook Warriors, especially after the Warriors (9-10-5) took a 1-0 lead on a second-half defensive miscue by the hosts, playing in front of a vocal and spirited crowd.

But hard work and persistence on the attack finally paid off when Josue Cueva drew Eastlake even on the scoreboard with 10:24 to play in regulation on a wicked shot high to the back of the netting from the top of the six-yard box.

The Titans finished with an 8-2 edge in shots for 80 minutes and owned the best scoring chance in the sudden-victory 15-minute overtime period. But there was no golden goal scored by either team and the contest went to the generally dreaded penalty-kick tiebreaker.

Things started off well for Eastlake, however, after goalkeeper Jose Cervantes dove to his right to block Fallbrook's first attempt. However, all three Titan players to take ensuing kicks missed wide of the net while the next three Warrior kickers all nailed their attempts to walk off the field with a 3-0 edge in the tiebreaker and a berth in the division championship game against either ninth-seeded Patrick Henry (8-8-5) or fifth-seeded Southwest El Centro (13-5-6).

“It hurts because we were the better team,” EHS coach Jason Renfro said after the game. “That team wanted to get for PKs – PKs are the one unfortunate part of this game.”

Still, the Eastlake coach said his team can hold its head high despite exiting the CIF playoffs before the team's desired final destination.

“It was a great season,” Renfro noted. “It was hard losing six starters the last month of the season. We had to pick up a lot of the pieces. I'm proud of the boys.”
