Barons top Raiders, 8-1, in Metro tournament contest

The visiting Bonita Vista Barons pushed across six runs in the fourth inning en route to crowning Southwest in a Metro Conference tournament game on Monday. Esteban Velasco racked up two RBI on four hits and scored twice for the Barons, who also received three RBI from Brandon Torio and eight strikeouts from Matthew Ball. Bonita Vista improved to 3-5 on the season.

Otay Ranch defeated Sweetwater, 15-2, in another Metro Conference tournament game to improve to 7-0 on the season.

Titans sweep pair in Hilltop tournament play

The Eastlake Titans swept both their games last Saturday in the annual Hilltop tournament, defeating Olympian by a score of 3-2 and Clairemont by a score of 10-0.

Jenelle Ladrido had two hits and scored two runs in the win over Olympian while Katie Johnson scattered four hits and struck out seven batters to pick up the victory in the pitching circle. Dylan Christensen drove in three runs against Clairemont while freshman Sam Manti allowed two hits and struck out eight batters. The Titans (4-2 overall) improved to 2-1 in tournament play following a 6-5 loss to Brawley on March 14. The Hilltop tournament continues Saturday, March 23.

The defending San Diego Section Division IV champion Mater Dei Catholic Crusaders defeated Valley Center, 3-0, last Saturday to improve their early season record to 5-1.

Otay Ranch spikes Westview 3-0

The Otay Ranch Mustangs topped host Westview 25-19, 25-16, 25-15 in non-league play last Friday to improve to 2-1 on the season. Jared Arias and Andrew Freiha led the Mustangs in kills with 17 and 16, respectively, while Adrian Ventura contributed 37 assists. Freiha and Mitchell Duran each had 10 digs.

Titans, Mustangs win big in Metro openers

The Eastlake Titans and Otay Ranch Mustangs each won by commanding 19-3 margins in their Metro Conference openers on Monday.

Eastlake defeated host Mar Vista behind a game-high seven points (two goals, five assists) from junior Ryan Hayes. Senior Casey Stanko led the Titans (1-0 in league, 4-2 overall) with five goals while senior Devon Ballow contributed three goals and two assists, sophomore Jordan Vicente collected two goals and two assists, sophomore Dylan Furseth had two goals and one assist, junior Garrett Miele scored twice and sophomore Chase Morris scored once. Stanko and sophomore Christian Haffner led the winners with eight ground balls each. Rogelio Macedo and Mitchell Sabado were credited with just one goalie save each. Hayes leads Eastlake with 23 points and 16 assists while Stanko tops the Titans with 15 goals.

Otay Ranch (1-0, 1-1) scored 10 first-half goals against the Aztecs (0-1, 2-1) and finished the game with six goals in a five-minute span. Jake Weidner, the 2012 Metro Player of the Year, led the Mustangs with 10 goals. Montgomery’s Francisco Alonso had 19 saves in the loss.

Otay Ranch, Eastlake represented in senior all-star game

The San Diego Girls Water Polo Senior All-Star Game took place last Saturday at the Coronado municipal pool. Representing the Mesa League were Otay Ranch’s Sarah Medina and Eastlake’s Hibah Ahmed, both of whom played for the victorious large schools team.

Medina had two steals, one assist, four attempts and one ejection earned while Ahmed had one steal.
