Nancy Alvarado is receiving a Journalism Award from the Greater San Diego Reading Association for her honest portrayal of teaching on the border.
She will be honored on April 25 at an Awards Brunch at the Handlery Hotel along with teachers and authors from the Greater San Diego community.

It is my fervent hope that Sweetwater is well on the road to recovery, but it is clear there are some real problems to overcome, such as all the accounting problems going back almost 30 years, the multiple real estate fiascos (courtesy of Ed Brand and his army of secret dealmakers), the "political" appointments that should have been based upon actual qualifications--the list goes on and on.

Let's hope that the new board will not tire in their labors as they solve these very real problems.

Let's hope Mr. Stover and the new board work together for the best possible outcomes--for the good of the schools and the students.

And thanks to all the teachers, who held this district together, even as they were under attack from all who were trying to undermine the Greater Good.

Tom was always a shining light wherever he went. Even at the last retirees party we could see he was not doing well, but he got up and performed his duties as MC as he always did. We'll miss you Tom.

I was a Criminal Justice Major at SDSU and a Reserve Police Officer at CVPD when I met Tom. I sought out riding with him on his shifts whenever I could and would laugh at his humor; learn from his skills, and never forget his take on life especially when I became a Police Officer a few years later. I now live in Oregon but was "called" to look up the Star News this morning (which I never have done before) on my computer only to find Tom had passed. His spirit still fills me. He was a wonderful man.

I worked with Tom for 10 years, but he was a friend for life. There are so many things you can say about Tom, and he touched many lives.....and he never ever complained about his ongoing battle-

Living next-door to tom and Judy for the past 25 yrs. has always made my family feel safe. He was always finding my girls stats from their sports and clipping them to tape on our front door. Would always show up for games when my girls asked him too. RIP Tom

Yes, you are right, business as usual. We, the general public, have a slight chance that SDG&E will start behaving itself a bit better IF the CPUC miscreants get the walloping they so well deserve. Wouldn't it be great!

Thank you for recognizing the passing of Tom. He was a good friend to many of us. Respected, admired,(at times feared, because of his exceptional wit)but always loved. We miss him now and will continue, until we meet again.

Rember Tom always with a smile on his face. He always had a hello for upper classmates and the under classmates as well. Played a lot of sports in school with my brother Bill Slosar who also recently passed away. Bill always spoke highly of him. RIP
