SuHi's Rodriguez scores respect as a four-time league champion Phillip Brents | Fri, Oct 26 2012 01:31 PM

Sweetwater High School senior Briana Rodriguez scored a two-day total of 75 at this week’s South Bay League finals to earn honors as this year’s South Bay League Golfer of the Year.

Rodriguez shot 36 on nine holes Tuesday at the Bonita Golf Club and 39 on another nine holes Wednesday at Chula Vista Municipal. She scores a rarity in girls golf as a four-time league champion.

“It means a lot,” said Rodriguez, a three-time second team all-section honoree who is considering an offer from Eastern Washington to play college golf. “Knowing that I’ve helped my team improve, it means even more to me.”

The top six finishers from the two-day tournament qualified as members of the all-league first team; the next six finishers comprised the all-league second team.

The player with the lowest score earned recognition as the golfer of the year.

“She’s our shining star,” SuHi coach Don Howard said of Rodriguez, an experienced junior golfer.
“We haven’t gotten too many like her. Most of the kids pick up golf at school or play a couple weekends with their dads.”

Sweetwater, the regular season South Bay League champion, qualified five of six girls for Wednesday’s final round.

Joining Rodriguez on the all-league first team are Southwest’s Valerie Rodriguez (101), Chula Vista’s Cerissa Olguin (102) and Lizette Arteaga (103), Sweetwater’s Lauren Benitez (105) and CV’s Emily Longoria (108).

Second team all-league selections included Southwest's Alison Lawyer (111), Chula Vista's Delia Munoz (112), Southwest's Yuneht Jimenez (114), Sweetwater's Diana Hernandez (115), Chula Vista's Christina Corona (116) and Montgomery's Liliana Vazquez (117).

Runners-up for all-league honors included Sweetwater's Eric Calantog (119), Chula Vista's Alyssa Garcia (124), Southwest's Giselle Nogales (125), Montgomery's Monique Sanchez (125), Sweetwater's Mirna Cardenas (135) and Southwest's Elora Lawyer (141).

The San Diego Section team and individual tournament is scheduled Tuesday, Oct. 30, and Thursday, Nov. 1, at the Coronado Municipal course.

Eastlake, which edged Bonita Vista in finals play at the Admiral Baker North course, will represent the Mesa League in CIF team play. Also, six other girls going from the Mesa League and one from South Bay league will participate.

The top 8 teams and top 29 individuals plus ties will advance on to the CIF finals on Thursday.
