Star watch: John Fox, from Chula Vista to the NFL Phillip Brents | Fri, Dec 09 2011 03:28 PM

Denver Broncos head coach John Fox, who played football under celebrated local coaches Gil Warren and Bing Dawson at Castle Park High School and later suited up for Southwestern College and San Diego State University from 1974-75, watched his Broncos claim a 16-13 overtime victory over the San Diego Chargers in an NFL game played Nov. 27 at Qualcomm Stadium.

Fox and the Broncos are currently tied for first place in the AFC West Division with the Oakland Raiders and are two games ahead of the Chargers.

Fox took over the head coaching position of the Broncos this year after spending nine seasons as head coach of the Carolina Panthers. Fox led the Panthers to the NFC championship in 2003 and a berth in Super Bowl XXXVIII opposite the New England Patriots.

The Panthers finished runner-up by a score of 32-29 on a last-second field goal by New England's Adam Vinatieri. Fox owns a career NFL coaching record of 80-76, including a 7-5 record with Denver this season.
