Spartans rack up 42 points against Hilltop to win Kiwanis Bowl XI Phillip Brents | Fri, Sep 21 2012 12:12 PM

Who owns bragging rights to the Chula Vista Kiwanis Bowl? The Chula Vista Spartans do after winning for the ninth time in 11 starts following last Friday’s 42-20 victory against west side rival Hilltop.

The visiting Spartans raced out to a 42-0 lead and weathered three late Lancer touchdowns to improve their season record to 3-0.

Hilltop, despite some the late heroics, fell to 0-3 on the season.

“We’ve played great at times and we’ve played average at times,” CVHS head coach Judd Rachow said. “That has got to stop if we’re going to have any type of success this year.”

The Spartans host the Mira Mesa Marauders in a key Division I match-up Friday that should provide a more accurate measuring stick for a Chula Vista team that appears full of promise.

Hilltop will attempt to record its first win of the season when it plays at El Capitan.

Both games kick off at 7 p.m.

Mira Mesa (1-2) is coming off a 48-0 loss to currently top-ranked Oceanside while El Capitan (1-2) suffered a 55-49 double overtime setback to Serra.

The usual suspects were part of the Spartans’ latest victory.

Ricky Estevez passed for two touchdowns, Jevante Reed ran for two touchdowns, Ray Holden and Richard Walker each caught one touchdown pass. Jayvon Reed scored once in second-half duty, Carlos Aparicio finished the game with 10 kicking points and Hui Wolfgramm scored on a two-point conversion.

Reed rushed 14 times for 100 yards; he dragged tacklers into the end zone on one of his determined TD runs.

Estevez completed eight of 17 passes for 182 yards. He was intercepted once.

Holden had four catches for 98 yards, including a TD catch of 59 yards.

Walker had two catches for 57 yards, including a 38-yard scoring reception.

Hector Rodriguez led Chula Vista with eight tackles, followed by Jaylon Candler with seven.

Adrian De La Vega made one interception while Sebastian Medina and Javier Anzar both recovered fumbles.

De La Vega (defense) and Jevante Reed (offense) were named the Spartans’ MVPs of the game by the Kiwanis Bowl committee.

Hilltop’s Christian Sandoval (defense) and Montel Campbell (offense) were recognized with the same awards for their team.

Campbell rushed 19 times for 98 yards and  scored on a 17-yard run.

Drake Madarang (three carries, 54 yards) and quarterback Daniel Sanchez (94 passing yards) also rushed for touchdowns. Sanchez’s TD came on an 11-yard run as time expired.

Aparicio kicked two field goals (23 and 35 yards), both in the first half.

“This was a rivalry game,” De La Vega said. “We practiced hard all week — 100 percent.”

“We started out sloppy but we got our heads together,” Jevante Reed added.

The Spartans received a check for $1,000 from the Chula Vista Kiwanis Club while the Lancers received a $500 donation to their program.
