Southwestern tops Mesa, 34-0, ups conference record to 3-0 Phillip Brents | Fri, Oct 25 2013 01:45 PM

The Southwestern College football team’s strategy in its last two American Division-Mountain Conference games has been, in the words of head coach Ed Carberry, to “get out in front.”

The Jaguars rushed to a 29-3 lead against visiting East Los Angeles en route to claiming a 35-10 victory on Oct. 5.

Following a bye week that Carberry called “a great time to get healthy and work on,” it was then back to business last Saturday at San Diego Mesa.

Again, it was time for the Jags to get out in front, this time cruising to a 34-0 win over the rival Olympians.

Southwestern (3-0 in conference play, 5-1 overall) wasted little time in taking control of the game as Dominique Canez scored on a 13-yard run and Diderot Nemorin tacked on a one-yard scoring run as the visitors took a 13-0 first quarter-lead.

The Jags exploded for 21 points in the third quarter to remove any doubt from the outcome of the game.

Daniel Castro scored on a 63-yard interception return while quarterback Frank Foster scored on a one-yard run and Luis Perez added a six-yard scoring pass to J. Dickinson Gaines.

Southwestern accumulated 20 first downs to Mesa’s 12 and out-gained the Olympians 322 to 175 in total offensive yards.

Foster completed 10 of 15 passes for 136 yards without an interception; Perez completed seven of 15 attempts for 68 yards and one touchdown.

Nemorin led the Jags with 114 rushing yards on 13 carries.

DeSean Waters had four catches for 90 yards to lead SWC receivers.

Defensively, the Jags recorded seven sacks, including one-and-a-half by Alfonso Hampton, while Edward Felix and Jalal Yousofzai each recovered fumbles.

Southwestern will host Compton (0-3, 0-6) on Saturday. The game kicks off at 6 p.m. at Olympian High School.

SWC is currently engaged in a three-way tie for first place in the conference standings with Chaffey (3-0, 5-1) and Mt. San Jacinto (3-0, 4-2). The Jags play both teams in the final three weeks of the season.
