Southwestern rolls over San Diego Mesa 26-0 Phillip Brents | Fri, Sep 17 2010 01:01 AM

Quarterback Victor Perez (Chula Vista High School) completed 17 of 29 passes for 169 yard, including a 17-yard touchdown to Rob Jones (Barstow) in last Saturday’s 26-0 non-conference victory at San Diego Mesa to earn Southwestern College’s Offensive Player of the Week award.

Ramsey Iapala, a Sweetwater High alumnus, received the Jaguars’ Defensive Player of the Game award after pummeling the Olympians (0-2) for two-point safety, interception and sack.

Iapala also received the team’s coveted Big Stick award while Bonita Vista grad Donald McCuddy received SWC’s Special Teams Player of the Game award.

“The defense set the pace,” Jags coach Ed Carberry said.

Carberry reserved the team’s top performance in the win for Andrew Grimes, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound freshman wide receiver from Bonita Vista who caught 10 passes for 74 yards. For his efforts, Grimes received honorable mention honors by the Pacific Coast Conference in its weekly Athlete of the Week balloting.

Jones had five catches for 75 yards while Thomas Tutogi scored on a 44-yard run and Will Clark (Mar Vista) returned an interception 26 yards for another score. Chris Navarro (Chula Vista) booted a 24-yard field goal and tacked on three PAT conversions.

SWC (1-1) hosts the Grossmont Griffins (1-1) Saturday at 6 p.m.

Perez boosts SDSU win
Castle Park grad Abel Perez booted two more field goals, giving him four on the season in seven tries, in San Diego State University’s 41-21 victory at New Mexico State last Saturday. Perez connected from distances of 25 and 32 yards and also recorded six touchbacks in eight tries.

Fellow Trojans alum Demarco Sampson caught four passes for 73 yards.
SDSU (2-0), off to its best start since 1994, plays at Missouri (2-0) this Saturday.
