Southwestern hoop women outlast Grossmont Tom Basinski | Mon, Jan 28 2013 02:08 PM

In a game that featured as much unladylike pushing and shoving as one would see at the front door of Wal-Mart the day after Thanksgiving, the Lady Jaguars of Southwestern hung on to defeat the Griffins of Grossmont, 59-54 Friday, Jan. 25.
It is said that ladies don’t sweat; they “glow.” After all the collisions in the paint there were so many bodies on the floor the referees had to halt the game four times to get towels from the sidelines to wipe up the “glow” from the floor.
Southwestern dominated the first half, leading by 12 points most of that frame, taking a 30-18 lead to the locker room.
Grossmont coach Karen Caires lit a fire under her charges during intermission as the Griffins cut the lead to a mere four points with 4:32 left.
Coach Darnell Cherry’s ladies of Southwestern got back on track, but nearly let the game slip away with some poor floor decisions and unnecessary fouls that were less than intelligent.
Southwestern’s Chloe Cook led all scorers with 17 points that included five treys from beyond the arc. Alexis Harris followed with 13 as Southwestern’s record went to 12-10.
Jonalynn Fuertes led Grossmont with 17 points and Shantee Woods added 11. Grossmont’s record slipped to 7-12.
