Southwest Raiders win third consecutive South Bay League roller hockey title Phillip Brents | Tue, Feb 11 2014 01:47 AM

The Southwest Raiders became the first team to qualify for the upcoming Kiwanis Cup playoffs after securing the rights to this year’s South Bay League championship. The league title is the third consecutive for the Raiders.

Southwest (11-0 in league play, 12-2 overall) continued its undefeated odyssey through league play after topping Mar Vista, 6-0, on Monday. Angel Rocha collected five goals while Henry Avalos dished out four assists to support of the team’s shutout defensive effort. Danny Diaz scored the other Raider goal.

“Working hard as a team, taking shots on net and playing defense first, those three things have made our program,”  Rocha said.

Rocha, Avalos and goaltender Jose Andrade each have helped drive Southwest in its three championship seasons.

“This year, the newcomers have learned fast and have really shown a passion for the game,” Avalos said in offering his opinion on the success of this season’s squad.

“It means we’re working as a team,” Andrade said. “I’m glad I’ve played with my teammates these past three years.”

Rocha leads Southwest with 59 goals and nine assists. His 68 total scoring points place him third overall in scoring among Sweetwater district players — trailing Eastlake’s wonder boy Aaron Mayer (67 goals, 110 points) and Bonita Vista scoring ace Jonathan O’Brien (66 goals, 70 points).

In other games played Monday at the Castle Park High School rink:

Castle Park 4, Sweetwater 2
The Red Devils appear to be playing their best hockey in the late stages of the season — the Trojans were the latest team to discover that. It took Nacho Mireles’ second goal of the game to finally give Castle Park (7-4 in South Bay League play, 9-10-1 overall) some much-needed breathing room after Sweetwater had closed to within 3-2 on the scoreboard through two periods. Freddie Perez scored the Trojans’ first goal, assisted by David Lopez. Ulises Mireles scored both Red Devil goals.

St. Augustine 15, Hilltop 0

The Saints controlled this non-league encounter from the get-go, piling up a 7-0 lead after the opening period and leading 13-0 entering the final period. Jay Farrell keyed St. Augustine with one goal and five assists while Ian Harkness added three goals and one assist, Charlie Tomlin, Chris Barr and Nick Heid each had two goals and one assist, Nate Pascual scored twice, Nick Dhuyvetter had a goal and assist, Fernando Huerta and Nick Tarantino each scored once and Spencer Minsky had three assists. The Saints improved to 6-8 with the non-league win while Hilltop dropped to 8-9 overall.

In a game played Monday at RSportz Arena in El Cajon:

Cathedral Catholic 7, Poway 6
Andrew Bonder scored in the dying minutes as the Dons pulled out a hard-fourth non-league victory over the Titans. Sam Angles led Cathedral with four goals and two assists while teammate Michael Leone collected two goals and three assists. In the loss, Poway received two goals from Kit Carter and single goals from Nick Brooks, Charlie Liebman, Jeff Hutton and Shane O'Brien.

In a game played Monday at the Escondido Sports Center:

Rancho Bernardo 11, Scripps Ranch 2
The Broncos hiked their North County League leading record to 9-2 after skating past the Falcons. Spencer Ridout led Rancho Bernardo (13-2 overall) with six goals while teammate Asher McCormick scored twice. Zach Lopez and Jesse Lycan each scored single goals for Scripps Ranch.

In games Tuesday at the CPHS rink:

Hilltop 4, Otay Ranch 3

The Lancers picked up their first Mesa League victory of the season by edging the Mustangs. Hilltop built a 3-0 lead on goals by Andrew Tesner, Danny Godinez and Phillip Fuñe but Otay Ranch stormed back in the final period with two goals by Devyn Taras to close the game to one goal at 3-2, still in the Lancers' favor. But Tesner scored a power play goal to increase the Hilltop lead to 4-2. Taras then set up a Mustang goal with 1:10 to play but Otay Ranch could get no closer.

Eastlake 18, Bonita Vista 1
Titan scoring wiz Aaron Mayer set a new CIF-Metro Conference milestone with 13 points (five goals, eight assists) to up his season point total to 123 - eclipsing the previous regular season scoring record of 119 points held by Castle Park grad Donny McGraw. McGraw tacked on seven goals in the Kiwanis Cup playoffs to give him 126 points in one season, regular season and playoffs combined. Eastlake (13-1) has six more games remaining in regular season play, plus any playoff contests.

The Titans improved to 7-0 in league play to officially clinch the Mesa League title for 2013-14 and, in the process, punch their ticket to the Kiwanis Cup championship playoffs. Sam Bawden collected three goals and two assists, Mike Mechling scored four goals, Nick Ziccardi had three goals and one assist, Danny Castillo had two goals and one assist and Will Winters had one goal to buttress the EHS scoring parade that saw the Titans score 18 unanswered goals after Bonita Vista's Jonathan O'Brien opened the game with a breakaway goal. But O'Brien and the Barons were unable to beat Eastlake netminder Gabe Sanchez after that.

Scripps Ranch 5, Southwest 1

Fans got a potential preview of the upcoming Kiwanis Cup playoffs as the Falcons from the North County League met the three-time South Bay League champion Raiders in a non-league match-up. The game was a bit closer on the floor than the final score indicated, with Scripps pulling away a bit in the final period after building a 3-1 lead in a tightly-played contest through the opening two periods of play. The Falcons led 2-0 at the close of the first period.

Zach Lopez led Scripps (6-9) with two goals while Dylan Rodin collected a goal and two assists and Jesse Lycan and Brent Oliver each potted one goal in support of winning goaltender Casey Wu. Angel Rocha scored the lone goal for Southwest (12-3). Raider netminder Jose Andrade kept his team in the game with 61 saves.

In games played Wednesday at the CPHS rink:

Southwest 7, Sweetwater 0
The Raiders completed South Bay League with a perfect 12-0 record as Henry Avalos scored four goals, Joshua Lopez scored Southwest's opening goal. The Raiders also received one goal from team scoring leader Angel Rocha. The shutout was the sixth of the season for Southwest.

Otay Ranch 9, Bonita Vista 8 (OT)

The Barons held an 8-7 lead with two minutes to play but the Mustangs scored with less than a minute to play in regulation to tie the score, forcing overtime. Devyn Taras then recorded his seventh goal of the game, assisted by Carlos Barrios, to give Otay Ranch the comeback win in overtime. Taras finished the Mesa League game with seven goals and two assists -- recording points on all nine Mustang goals while Barrios collected two goals and two assists. Jonathan O'Brien led Bonita Vista with six goals while Thomas Giltner and Giancarlo Dongo each scored one goal in a losing cause.

In games played Thursday at the CPHS rink:

Otay Ranch 6, Mar Vista 2

Carlos Barrios led the Mustangs with a hat trick while Ricky Ponce tacked on a goal and assist in a winning effort. Billy Warren and Dane Bottomley each scored once for the Mariners.

Southwest 7, Eastlake 1

Both teams were missing key players in this match-up of respective champions from the South Bay League and Mesa League but the Titans may have been missing the most important player on the playing court -- CIF-Metro Conference scoring leader Aaron Mayer. Still, no one can take away the well-executed game played by the three-time defending South Bay League Raiders, who turned a close game early on into a rout on the scoreboard with a late rush.

Eastlake, coming off a 12-3 loss to Westview the previous evening at the Escondido Sports Center, scored first on a goal by Will Winters, assisted by Nick Ziccardi. Southwest answered later in the opening period on a goal by team scoring leader Angel Rocha, assisted by Danny Diaz.

The Raiders (14-3) scored the only goals of the second period, as Rocha tacked on three more tallies -- two of them unassisted and another assisted by Diaz -- to push Southwest ahead 4-1. Rocha scored the opening two goals of the third period, including one on a power play to give the Raiders a commanding 6-1 lead. Christian Gonzalez then closed out scoring in the game, assisted by Rocha, in the dying seconds. Southwest goaltender Jose Andrade finished the game with 48 saves to bolster the Southwest cause.

Rocha finished the game with six goals and one assist, recording a point on each of the Raiders goals in the memorable win. Southwest scored seven unanswered goals after the Titans (13-3) opened scoring in the game.

Bonita Vista 8, Chula Vista 2

The Barons got back on the winning track after dropping a tough overtime loss the night before as Jonathan O'Brien continued his push toward the 100-point scoring plateau with four goals and two assists. Giancarlo Dongo collected a hat trick and Thomas Giltner scored once to brace Bonita Vista, which picked up its 12th win of the season. Mikey Thompson continued his late season scoring rush with two goals for the Spartans.
