South Bay League 2010 football preview: Mar Vista Mariners Phillip Brents | Thu, Sep 02 2010 11:22 PM

Mar Vista qualified for last year’s San Diego Section Division III playoffs after engineering a surprise 4-2 finish in South Bay League play, good for a three-way tie in the league standings alongside Montgomery and Sweetwater. But the Mariners’ finish was no surprise to head coach Brian Hay.

Hay and the rest of the MVHS program are equally optimistic about the 2010 season, especially with the realignment of the South Bay League and with the team braced by 15 returning starters. The Mariners, drum roll, are the top returning team based on last year’s 5-6 record. So does that make them the favorite?

Mar Vista’s final three games of the season will determine that.

Top returners include senior running backs Justin Peoples and Rommel Cooper, tackles leader Ruben Gonzales, middle linebacker Gaston Garza and lineman Andrew Ludlow (6-4, 260). Peoples and Cooper each amassed a combined 1,000 yards last year. Jordan Lertique will handle the quarterback position.
