SoCal Venom captures Triple Crown softball World Series title Phillip Brents | Thu, Sep 01 2011 12:41 AM

The SoCal Venom 10-under girls softball travel team won three championships during the fall 2010 season. While the results weren’t nearly as spectacular this spring and early summer, the team came around to peak at the right time.

The prize was the championship title of the 10-Youth Division at last month’s Triple Crown Sports World Series in Reno, Nev.

“We had a rough spring compared to last fall but, over the last five to six weeks,  the girls picked up the game really well,” SoCal Venom manager Joaquin Farfan Jr. said.

The Venom went 9-0 at the Reno tournament, outscored opponents 82-5 and tattooed Team 2000 from Arizona, 8-0, in the championship game.

Arianna Villalva struck out eight batters and limited the Arizonans to just three hits in picking up the win in the pitching circle in the championship game. She finished the tournament 5-0 with zero earned runs allowed.

Ariana Miranda keyed the Venom in the title game with three RBI.

The Venom used two primary pitchers in the Triple Crown event. Mia Marinakis went 4-0 and allowed two earned runs. She allowed just one earned run while also smashing a two-run home run in helping her team defeat the So Cal Rage, 4-3, in the semifinals.

The tournament took place July 25-30 and included 35 teams from the western United States and Canada.

The Venom qualified to compete in the American Softball Association nationals in Tennessee but elected to participate in a more local championship event, according to the team’s coaching staff.
