SDSU's Kayla Jordan honored as Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year Phillip Brents | Thu, May 31 2012 02:59 PM

Bonita Vista High School alum Kayla Jordan, now a member of San Diego State University’s softball team, has been chosen as the Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year. She becomes the sixth SDSU player to win the award and third in four seasons.

Jordan hit .425 (17-for-40) in conference play, tying for the league lead with two triples. The left fielder also tied for second in stolen bases (four), ranked third in on-base percentage (.549), fourth in runs (11) and fifth in hits.
On the season overall, Jordan hit .324 and led the team with 12 stolen bases and a school-record tying five triples. She ranked second in runs (28) and walks (16), while owning a .455 slugging percentage and .400 on-base percentage.

Jordan joins five Aztec teammates on the all-conference team: sophomore Hayley Miles (Antelope), seniors Justeen Maeva (Mira Mesa) and Bailey Micetich (Woodland), redshirt junior Rebecca Arbino (Clovis) and redshirt sophomore Patrice Jackson (Kansas City, Mo.). San Diego State’s six all-conference selections led the league.

MIles earned honors as the Mountain West Co-Player of the Year.
In MWC games, Miles led the league in runs (21), home runs (10), RBIs (21), walks (13) and slugging percentage (1.359), all from the leadoff spot, while batting a team-high .487 (19-for-39). She also ranked second in on-base percentage (.623) and tied for third in hits (19).

After playing center field last year, Miles made the move to shortstop in 2012 and was perfect in 53 fielding chances (the second most chances with a 1.000 fielding percentage in the league). It is the second all-conference selection for Miles, who was the MWC Freshman of the Year last season.

SDSU finished the 2012 season 32-24 overall, 9-3 in conference play.
