San Ysidro, Sweetwater remain on boys hoops collision course Phillip Brents | Fri, Jan 20 2012 11:54 AM

The San Ysidro Cougars are out to a 4-0 start in South Bay League play with a commanding 16-3 overall record and No. 8 ranking among San Diego Section teams. Are they the best the Metro Conference has to offer in 2011-12? Much will be on the line when the Cougars pay a visit to the Sweetwater Red Devils on Friday.

The Cougars and Red Devils seem to be among the early favorites to contend for this year’s league championship.

San Ysidro defeated Montgomery, 57-49, last Friday to remain unbeaten in three league starts while Sweetwater topped Castle Park, 79-35, to also improve to 3-0 in league play.

Both teams won again on Wednesday. The Cougars blasted Castle Park, 87-30, while the Devils got the better of longtime arch rival Chula Vista by a score of 82-48.

The usual suspects played a role in the Cougars’ latest two wins. Javion Watson led all scorers in the game against Montgomery with 31 points while Ronald Stewart added 10 points.

On Wednesday, it was more of a balanced team effort with Watson, Chandler Tarrant and Fernando Ahumada each collecting 18 points.

Three Devils scored in double figures to key last Friday’s win: Junior Bautista with 21 points and Johnny Gonzalez and Spencer Mattox each with 15 points.

SuHi rolled to its fifth straight win on Wednesday behind 28 points from Cadua, 20 points from Bautista and 11 points from Gonzalez.

San Ysidro defeated host Southwest, 88-35, to tip off league play on Jan. 4. The Cougars put the game away with a 35-10 run in the third quarter.

Watson led the visitors with 27 points while Ahumada poured in 20 points and Keeko Sinegal added 14 points.

San Ysidro rolled past visiting Mar Vista, 82-39, two days later as Watson jammed in 31 points and Sinegal tacked on 14 points.

Watson, one of the bona fide top players in the section this season, is averaging 29.2 points per game.

So far he’s been an unstoppable force on the playing court, helping his team to a current nine-game winning streak.

Sweetwater (9-9 overall) improved to 2-0 in league play following a 85-50 victory against visiting Montgomery on Jan. 11. Bautista led the hosts with 21 points while Gonzalez contributed 19 points, Mattox had 17 points and Charles Cadua had 11 points.

The Red Devils tipped off South Bay League play Jan. 4 with an 81-39 victory at Mar Vista behind 26 points from Bautista and 22 points from Mattox. Cadua had 16 points and Gonzalez had 13 points as four SuHi players scored in double figures.

Montgomery (3-2, 11-8) tipped off South Bay League play with a pair of victories — 66-14 at Castle Park on Jan. 4 and 61-51 against visiting Southwest on Jan. 6.

Jestin Jameson led the Aztecs with 20 points in last Friday’s setback to San Yisdro while Charles Williams tacked on 12 points. Preston Thomas keyed Montgomery with 17 points in the team’s preceding game against Sweetwater.

MLK Showcase
San Ysidro topped Horizon Christian, 76-62, in Monday’s Martin Luther King Showcase at Hoover High School. Sinegal paced the Cougars with 24 points while Watson and Stewart each contributed 19 points.
