Rebels Cup introduces college showcase division to event

This past weekend, the Rebels Cup took center stage in the San Diego region with 350 youth soccer teams entered in the event. Competition in the tournament, now in its fifth year, ranged from U6 to U18 divisions in both boys and girls.

Games took place from as far north as La Jolla to as far eastward as Cuyamaca College in El Cajon. The majority of games, befitting the presenting club, took place in South County, of course.

Local venues included All Seasons Park, Bonita Vista High School, Bonita Vista Middle School, Chula Vista Community Park, Cottonwood Park, Eastlake Middle School, Explorer Park, Lower Voyager Park, Marisol Park, Rancho del Rey Middle School, Southwestern College, Terra Nova Park and Windingwalk Park.

The College Showcase Division made its debut at this year’s tournament. Games took place last Saturday and Sunday at Southwestern College in boys U18 and girls U17 and U18 divisions and allowed local players to be scouted by coaches from participating college programs.

“We’ve been working on it for about five years,” Rebels Soccer Club director of coaching Ryan Marquez explained. “This is the first year for the showcase and we feel it’s only going to grow in the future. It’s an opportunity for the South Bay kids to be seen by college scouts in their own area rather than having them travel somewhere else.

“We’re happy to start small and grow bigger as time goes on. It’s super exciting.”

San Diego State University, the University of San Diego, Oakland University (Rochester, Mich.) and the University of Idaho were among the college programs represented at last weekend’s showcase.
