Prep football: Eagles, Mustangs keep on winning, improve to 3-0 Phillip Brents | Fri, Sep 21 2012 12:08 PM

If there ever was a time to gain irreversible respect — and a climb up the rankings polls — this Friday is it for the Olympian Eagles and Otay Ranch Mustangs football teams.

Both the Eagles and Mustangs are off to 3-0 starts and have already beaten some respectable opponents. But neither can pass up the opportunity that presents itself this week.

Olympian hosts the Lincoln Hornets in a key Division III match-up while Otay Ranch plays seventh-ranked St. Augustine at Mesa College.

Both games kick off at 7 p.m.

Olympian is coming off a stunning 40-20 non-league victory against visiting El Camino. The Wildcats were off to a 2-0 start after impressive Division I victories against San Diego (36-12) and Mira Mesa (34-16) but, after scoring an early touchdown to take a 7-6 lead against the Eagles, surrendered 34 unanswered points.

Olympian rushed for 298 yards with five touchdowns coming via the run. Sergio Bailey led the Eagles with two scores — one rushing and one receiving. Andrell Snowden, Harrison Hulin (nine rushes, 72 yards), Josaiah Thomas and Jared Ammerman also scored rushing TDs.

Eagles QB Christopher Humphrey completed six of 14 passes for 87 yards and one touchdown.
Bailey electrified the home crowd by scoring on a 61-yard reverse.

Lincoln (2-1) edged Point Loma, 19-14, last week in a key Division III match-up and will be looking to further impress the playoff seeding committee.

Otay Ranch will be out to do the same (though in Division I) with a positive outcome against the likewise undefeated Saints (3-0).

The Mustangs topped defending Metro-South Bay League champion Mar Vista, 35-13, in Imperial Beach last Friday while St. Augustine was pushed to defeat defending Metro-Pacific League champion Mater Dei Catholic, 28-10, in Chula Vista.

Otay Ranch’s latest victory featured a balanced score sheet: 177 passing yards and 164 rushing yards. QB Kyle Hawkins passed for 112 yards with one touchdown and one interception and also rushed for 75 yards and one score.

Anthony Williams rushed 20 times for 64 yards and also completed a 65-yard halfback pass to Chris Martin for a touchdown.

Williams threw for one score, rushed for one score and also caught a pass for a score while Hawkins burst up the middle for a 48-yard touchdown scamper.

Martin had four catches for 101 yards; he also returned a punt 67 yards for a score and had one pick on defense.

Justin Doton led the Mustangs with 17 tackles while Francisco Solis had two sacks and a fumble recovery.

Extra points
•Michael Thomas rushed for three scores and David Diaz scored twice on quarterback keepers while also throwing a touchdown pass in San Ysidro’s 40-16 non-league victory against visiting Foothills Christian.

•QB Dominic Villamor rushed for two touchdowns and also threw for a pair in Southwest’s 41-10 victory against the Rock Academy. Maceo Harris scored on a 95-yard kick-off return.
