Pigskin parade: 2013 Metro Conference all-league football teams named Phillip Brents | Sat, Jan 18 2014 12:24 AM

The San Diego Section conducted its 2013 championship playoffs in six divisions but the all-section team was reserved for the very best, and 13 Metro Conference student-athletes made the cut, including nine first team selections.

The Metro-Mesa League Eastlake Titans, who advanced to the inaugural Open Division semifinals, led the local talent parade with five players named to the all-section squad, inclusive of all divisions.

First team all-section honors went to the following Titans: junior running back Isaiah Strayhorn and senior offensive lineman Wes Braddock among on offense and senior defensive lineman Emilio Rodriguez, senior linebacker Keifer Graham and senior defensive back Isiah Olave on defense.

Olave and Graham previously earned honors as the Metro-Mesa League’s offensive and defensive players of the year, respectively.

Mar Vista, which finished runner-up to Hilltop for the Metro-South Bay League championship, was honored with two first team-all section picks: senior running back Jimmie Hill and senior offensive lineman Andres Preciado.

Hill was earlier named the Metro-South Bay League’s co-offensive player of the year.

Overall, nine Metro Conference players received recognition as all-section first team selections. Also making the elite list were Castle Park senior defensive lineman Robert Stretch and Olympian seinor Rey Osuna.

Stretch was previously voted the Metro-Pacific League Defensive Player of the Year.

Second team all-section picks on offense included Hilltop senior running back Drake Madarang and Mater Dei Catholic senior receiver Iman Chatman-Dixon while second team all-section honors on defense were accorded to Bonita Vista senior defensive lineman Ricky Alvarez and Hilltop senior linebacker David Vasquez.

Madarang shared honors with Hill as the Metro-Pacific offensive co-player of the year while Vasquez was voted the league’s defensive player of the year.

Imperial senior running back Royce Freeman, who rewrote the section career rushing record in 2013, earned honors as the section’s offensive player of the year — a first for a player from Imperial County. Freeman finished his prep career with the Tigers with 7,605 rushing yards and 111 touchdowns (another section record).

Mission Hills senior linebacker Fred Warner was named the section’s defensive player of the year after leading the Grizzlies to the Open Division title.

Crawford coach Michael Wright earned honors as the section’s coach of the year after leading the Colts to an undefeated 10-0 regular season showing and a runner-up finish in the Division V championship game.
