The Chula Vista Spartans got physical in last Friday’s season opening gridiron battle against the visiting Granite Hills Eagles, and the result was a dominating 35-12 victory for the hosts.

The Spartans head into Friday’s Legacy of Pride rivalry game at Sweetwater sporting a 1-0 record in non-league play.

Chula Vista rushed for 354 yards and tacked on 75 yards off the arm of quarterback Ricky Estevez to throttle Granite Hills, playing its first game under new coach Kellan Cobbs.

Jevante Reed rushed 22 times for 231 yards and scored three touchdowns, including one 67-yard jaunt from the line of scrimmage while dragging along defenders.

Ray Holden caught three passes for 33 yards and one touchdown (16 yards) while Jorge Llanes (five carries, 45 yards) scored the Spartans’ other TD on a 22-yard run. Carlos Aparicio booted five extra-point conversions.

Defensively, Jaylon Candler led the team with 11 tackles while also registering a five-yard sack.

Friday’s meeting will be the 66th between Chula Vista and Sweetwater. The Spartans have won the last six meetings, though the Red Devils continue to lead the series 36-26-3.

Kick-off is 7 p.m.

Sweetwater is coming off a 48-13 non-league setback at El Cajon Valley.
