Palomar Comets dominate Southwestern men in 76-51 victory Tom Basinski | Wed, Feb 06 2013 01:23 PM

Visiting Palomar wasted no time establishing the upper hand over the men's basketball team of Southwestern Friday night. Coach John O’Neil’s Comets dominated the Jaguars at every turn en route to a 76-51 Pacific Coast Athletic Conference victory.
In a disastrous first half that saw Southwestern shooting 16 percent on 5-for-31 from the floor, Palomar took a 39-13 lead into intermission.
Palomar controlled the backboards, grabbing 54 rebounds to the Jaguars’ 35. Seven-footer Joe Vaz for the Comets, although not gifted athletically, scored 18 and hauled in 13 rebounds. His teammates would lob a high pass and Vaz would put up a soft bank shot. He was 8-for-8 from the free throw line.
In an effort to fire up his charges, SWC coach John Cosentino hollered at one of the officials to do something anatomically impossible. His command merited Cosentino a technical foul. The coach’s outburst may have proven mildly successful as Southwestern outscored Palomar 38-37 in the second half. Palomar’s record improved to 16-8 while Southwestern fell to 8-13.
Corey Phillips bagged 13 points for Palomar on 3-for-6 from three-point range, along with 4-for-4 in free throws. Dominique Miller scored 13 for Southwestern.
