Otay Ranch swims past Eastlake in elite Mesa League girls match-up Phillip Brents | Fri, Apr 06 2012 01:31 PM

The Otay Ranch High School girls swim team appears to be working toward its first Mesa League championship after improving to 2-0 in league dual meets following a breakthrough 101-82 victory against Eastlake March 29 at Southwestern College.

The win over the Titans marked the first league loss by Eastlake’s girls team in eight years, according to ORHS Ernie Medina, thus giving the Mustangs reason to celebrate.

But Medina cautioned that his team cannot celebrate too early.

“Still left in league are Hilltop, Olympian and Mater Dei,” the ORHS swim coach said.

Still, the Eastlake-Otay Ranch dual meet likely brought together the top two teams in the league at this point of the season.

The Titan boys team remained undefeated in league duals following a 124-59 victory against the Mustangs, who dropped to 1-1 in league (4-1 overall).

The ORHS girls team also is 4-1 overall.

The high profile encounter produced a sizable series of CIF qualifying times on the part of both teams.

Otay Ranch’s girls squad reeled off victories in the opening four events before the break for diving.

The Mustang quartet of Fernanda Arambula, Sarah Medina, Sara Gagarin and Mariela Rodriguez timed 2:03.18 in touching first in the meet-opening 200 medley relay.

Rodriguez followed by winning the 200 freestyle in 2:08.39 while Gagarin captured the 200 individual medley in 2:26.88 and Medina won the 50 freestyle in 26.08.

CIF qualifying times also were turned in by Medina in the 100 freestyle (56.74), Rodriguez in the 500 freestyle (5:43.73) and Larysa Lucatero in the 100 butterfly (1:05.13) and 100 backstroke (1:05.13).

Otay Ranch timed 1:52.06 in the 200 freestyle relay while Eastlake posted a winning time of 4:01.30 time in the meet-ending 400 freestyle relay.

CIF qualifying times went to Titans Sharon Jimenez (2:09.97, 200 freestyle), Kerry Lindsay (27.06, 50 freestyle) and Jana Miclat (1.05.75, 100 butterfly).

Eastlake timed 2:05.95 in taking a runner-up finish in the 200 medley relay (Miclat, Kelsey Schauer, Natsumi Watanabe and Lindsay); Otay Ranch finished second in the 400 freestyle relay in 4:01.80.

The Mustangs won every event in the girls swim card except the last event. Zully Maldonado recorded a CIF qualifying mark of 154 to win the girls dive event.

Medina is undefeated this season in the 50 and 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly; Rodriguez is undefeated in both the 200 and 500 freestyle. Gagarin remains undefeated in the 100 breaststroke while Lucatero is undefeated in the 100 backstroke and Maldonado is undefeated in diving.

Meanwhile, the Eastlake boys squad won all events except backstroke and diving.

The Titans notched first-place finishes in the opening four events to build an early 48-14 advantage on the scoreboard.

The EHS unit of Jimmy Jeffery, Luca Casimiro, John Randazzo and Jian Miclat captured the 200 medley relay in 1:46.12.
Jeffery followed by winning the 200 freestyle with a CIF time of 1:55.19 while Casimiro timed 2:01.93 in winning the 200 IM. Miclat notched a CIF time of 23.03 in winning the 50 freestyle.

Casimiro also recorded a fast time in winning the 100 butterfly (54.79).

The Titans swept all three relay events, winning the 200 freestyle distance in 1:39.49 and the 400 freestyle distance in 3:32.01.
Otay Ranch’s Mathew Switzer swam to CIF qualifying times in winning the backstroke (1:00.13) ahead of Eastlake’s Jeffery (1:01.80) while posting a runner-up finish (1:57.26) to Jeffery in the 200 freestyle.

The teams are next in action on Thursday, April 12, when Otay Ranch hosts Hilltop at 7 p.m. at the Loma Verde pool while Eastlake swims at Granite Hills’ new campus pool in a high profile non-league dual meet at 4 p.m.

Because of the large number of divers on both teams, the Otay-Hilltop dive meet will take place Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Loma Verde pool.

The Mesa League finals are May 5; the San Diego Section championship meet is May 19.
