The Otay Ranch High School swim team defeated Chula Vista April 29 in a Mesa League double dual meet at the Parkway pool. The Mustangs swam past the Spartans, 138-43, in the boys half of the competition and captured the girls half of the meet by a score of 146-46.

Among the highlights in the boys meet were victories in the 50-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly by Otay Ranch senior Mike Kowalski. The ORHS swimmer won the sprint distance in 22.0 seconds and claimed first place in the butterfly event in 54.0.

With the victories, Kowalski remained undefeated in dual meets in both events for the last three years.
Otay Ranch sophomore Sarah Medina set a school record in the girls 50 freestyle in 25.30 and also set a school record in the 100 freestyle in 55.09.

Other Mustangs notching CIF qualifying times in the girls meet included Sabrina Ogden (1:06.0 in the butterfly), Mariela Rodriguez (5;50.0 in the 500 freestyle) and Zully Maldonado (154.5 points in diving).

Chula Vista’s Lidia Espinoza posted CIF qualifying times in the 200 individual medley (2:22.0) and 500 freestyle (5:37.0). She is the defending league champion in the 200 IM.

The Metro Conference swim finals are scheduled May 14 at Loma Verde pool. The diving finals are scheduled May 13 at Parkway pool.
