Otay Ranch's Gillespie is Metro's front runner Phillip Brents | Fri, Sep 28 2012 01:34 PM

Hot, humid conditions have plagued the southland in a prolonged display of summer. But that hasn’t daunted the Metro Conference’s resident cross country Superwoman, Otay Ranch senior Carina Gillespie, who recorded a three-second victory to capture the girls varsity division title at last Friday’s 39th annual South Bay Invitational.

It was Gillespie’s second individual championship on the Rohr Park course in the span of two weeks after winning her division at the Mustang/East Hills Realty Invitational on Sept. 7.

Last Friday’s victory, however, had to be a bit more pleasing. Braced by her first-place finish, the Mustangs won the team title.

“I wanted to keep my spot; I wanted to do it for my team,” said Gillespie, who timed 15:30 in the 2.5-mile race. “What was really amazing was that we had three girls place in the top 10.”

Gillespie finished ahead of Monte Vista senior Emily Lopez (15:33); San Pasqual junior Roselyn Cantu was third in 15:37.

Otay Ranch, with five runners among the top 30 finishers, won with 77 points. San Pasqual, paced by a pair of top five finishers, placed second with 93 points.

Monte Vista placed third with 134 points while Bonita Vista was a strong fourth with 141 points.

For the Mustangs, sophomore Darla Osuna was ninth in 15:56, followed by senior triplets Catie LeDesma (10th, 16:05), Andie LeDesma (27th, 16:42) and Bailie LeDesma (30th, 16:53).

Sweetwater senior George Martinez was third in the 5K boys varsity race, timing 15:57, to  lead the Red Devils to a third-place team finish.

SuHi finished six points ahead of fourth place Otay Ranch. Devil juniors Gerrardo Marquillo (seventh, 16:35) and Bryan Alvarado (15th, 16:46) were next in line among Metro runners, followed by Bonita Vista senior Jacob Sherman (16th, 16:50) and Otay’s Steven Liu (19th, 17:01) and Rodrigo Baza (21st, 17:02).
