Otay Ranch Mustangs open Metro-Mesa League baseball play with a blast Phillip Brents | Fri, May 02 2014 02:36 PM

The defending league co-champion Otay Ranch Mustangs opened Metro-Mesa League play Tuesday with a bang by defeating host Olympian 18-1. Mustangs Adrian and Alex Tovalin set a school record by becoming the first sibling tandem to hit home runs in the same game. Adrian Tovalin went four-for-five with five RBI while Alex Tovalin went two-for-three in the game.

Eddie Alvarez, who started on the mound and picked up the win, went three-for-four at the plate with a triple and four RBI while Frank Chavez went three-for-four with a pair of doubles and four RBI, Darryck Williams went three-for-four with three RBI and Anton Melendrez went three-for-three. “Our kids tore it up with their bats,” ORHS coach Bob McCurdy commented as the Mustangs improved to 17-5 overall.

Bonita Vista improved to 3-0 in Metro-Mesa League play by defeating visiting Mater Dei Catholic, 5-4, on Tuesday. The Barons (15-7 overall) erased a 4-3 deficit on a two-run scoring single by Chris O’Neill in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Crusaders (0-3 in league, 7-13 overall) had just two hits in the contest.
