North County wildfires prompt cancellation of all CIF sporting events on Thursday, Friday Phillip Brents | Thu, May 15 2014 01:47 PM

All athletic activity planned for Thursday, May 15, and Friday, May 16, has been cancelled by the San Diego Section because of wildfires spreading throughout San Diego’s North County region.

According to a section press release, no contests are to be played in any sport, including practices.

“The fires themselves, the fluidity of circumstances, air quality, traffic/travel, school closures and school access are all issues that have prompted this cancellation,” the statement read.

The section office said circumstances will be reviewed on Friday and information will be provided on the CIFSDS website regarding the resumption of competition. The section office stated it will also provide information on games that cannot be made up (such as due to playoff seeding) and any changes to the section calendar of events as a result of the cancellations.

The cancellations of all activity on Thursday and Friday impacts both the Metro Conference diving and track and field championship meets, which were originally scheduled for Thursday, and the Mesa League swimming championships, which were to be contested on Friday.

The league diving finals were originally scheduled to start a 2 p.m. at the Parkway pool while the Mesa League and South Bay League track finals were originally scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. at Otay Ranch High School. The Mesa League swim finals were scheduled at 5 p.m. at Mater Dei Catholic High School.

Also, league baseball, softball and lacrosse games scheduled for Thursday and Friday have been cancelled. Indications are that the softball and lacrosse games will not be made up because of pending playoff seeding meetings scheduled for Saturday; however, it appears that baseball games may be rescheduled for next week.

The CIF girls lacrosse playoff game between Bonita Vista and Eastlake, originally scheduled for Thursday at 3 p.m. at BVHS, was moved to Friday, at the same starting time, in advance of Wednesday evening's announcement by the section office of the cancellation of all Thursday sporting activities. Friday's game was then postponed Thursday afternoon.

It is possible that some activities originally scheduled for Thursday and Friday could be moved to Saturday, according to sources.

If any events on Saturday also are cancelled, that would push back all athletic competitions to later dates.

The CIF girls lacrosse championship triple-header is scheduled Saturday, but with semifinal games postponed on Friday, it cannot take place as originally planned.

The South Bay League swimming championships are scheduled Saturday, May 17, starting at 9 a.m. at Mater Dei Catholic High School.

Wildfires burning in the Carlsbad, Oceanside, San Marcos, Escondido and Rancho Bernardo areas have forced residential evacuations and closures of schools. Air quality, from onsite reports, is not good, with a thick brown haze hanging above the horizon in the affected areas.

High temperatures, gusting winds and low humidity levels have hampered fire-fighting efforts. Temperarures have hovered near the 100 degree mark while humidity levels have dropped to single digits, setting records for this time of the year. Because of the ongoing drought, tinderbox conditions exist throughout the county's scrub areas.

A thermometer reading of 101 degrees was recorded in downtown Chula Vista at 3:15 p.m. Thursday.

While air quality has not yet been severely affected in the South County region, and athletic contests could conceivably be staged, CIF officials stated they wish to keep all schools on an even footing, without giving an advantage to some schools, in issuing the section-wide cancellations.

The CIFSDS website can be accessed at www.cifsds.org.

CIF Memorandum
Memorandum from San Diego Section Commissioner Jerry Schniepp, received at 4:35 p.m. on Friday, reads as such:

The CIFSDS and San Diego County Superintendents determined on a conference call today, May 15, 2014, that all CIFSDS athletic competition and practice be cancelled for Thursday, May 15th and Friday, May 16th. No practices or games are to be held on either day.

Another conference call is scheduled for Friday, May 16, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. to discuss practice and competition for Saturday, May 17, 2014. Notification will be sent to all schools on Friday, May 16th, regarding practice and competition for Saturday, May 17th.

This loss of competition days has impacted all spring sports and has caused changes to playoff and regular season schedules. Some playoff schedules have been condensed and some regular season/league schedules will not be able to be completed. We fully realize the impact this has on every school, but have needed to consider many things in reviewing schedules, including:

Championship venue availability
Senior activities
Availability of top officials
Academic Calendars
State Championships

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in making these changes. The fires have devastated some parts of our section and school communities while others have not been impacted significantly. It is important for us all to be reminded that at times like these, athletics are secondary to the social, emotional and academic impact the fires have had on our schools. However, when we can resume our athletic schedule, we want to do all that we can to ensure that there is not a competitive advantage gained by any schools or teams. We have done our best to ensure this.

Please see details below regarding each spring sport and changes that have been made to scheduling:
