Near domination for Mar Vista, Eastlake, Otay Ranch at Metro swim finals Phillip Brents | Fri, May 17 2013 10:58 PM

What is domination in a high school championship swim meet? The Mar Vista High School girls team spelled it out with 626 points and 10 first-place finishes in 11 events at last Friday’s South Bay League finals at Mater Dei Catholic High School.

The Mar Vista boys squad wasn’t too far behind in the domination department with 569 points and eight first-place finishes.

The Mesa League’s resident juggernauts put on their own version of domination the following day at the same site. Eastlake’s boys team, perhaps the best in school history, won with 574 points and notched eight first-place finishes. Otay Ranch’s girls team, braced by seven championship swims, won a tight battle with Eastlake for the points lead with 545 — 26 points ahead of the Titans.

The MVHS girls championship title was the 12th for coach Sue Czerwiec. “We had a real strong team this year — a lot of seniors, a lot of talent, a lot of returners, a lot of JV kids who stepped up to varsity and even made finals,” she said.

San Ysidro’s Armando Inzunza (boys) and Mar Vista’s Reily Landry (girls) each received the South Bay League’s swimmers of the year awards while Mar Vista’s Duncan Hastings (boys) and Southwest’s Kathia Albanez (girls) received sportsmanship awards.

The Mariners also cashed in with points garnered by Meilani Nie, who won the league’s girls diving championship in competition at the Parkway pool.

Bonita Vista’s Anthony Ribal (boys) and Otay Ranch’s Sarah Medina (girls) earned honors as the Mesa League’s swimmers of the year. Ribal is the returning San Diego Section Division I champion in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Medina, a three-time player of the year in water polo, set a new school record in the 100-yard freestyle. Overall, the Mustangs set new school records in both the girls 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

“We had more than 90 percent improved times in the prelims and then more than half the kids took off more time in the finals,” said ORHS coach Ernie Medina, Sarah’s father. “We had so many good swims by our team — much needed to win the meet.”

Otay Ranch’s Alexis Lopez, Hilltop’s Nick Howard and Bonita Vista’s James Cevallos each received the league’s sportsmanship awards.

Eastlake’s boys team captured all three relay events by an average of four-second margins. “They were awesome,” EHS coach Bryan Monzon said. “They did a great job. They did not let me down. I’m looking forward to the next step — CIF.”

Saturday’s section finals start at 9 a.m. (Division II) and 3 p.m. (Division I) at Granite Hills High School.
