Mustangs open title defense with 18-0 win over Crusaders Phillip Brents | Fri, Jan 11 2013 12:25 PM

The Otay Ranch Mustangs opened defense of their Mesa League championship by defeating the Mater Dei Catholic Crusaders, 18-0, in the 2012-13 league opener for both teams Tuesday at MDCHS. The win was the fourth consecutive for the Mustangs and improved Otay Ranch’s overall record to 6-1 on the season.

Emma Cornwell made 12 saves to record her second shutout this season and also scored one goal. Sarah Medina led the Mustangs with seven goals, 11 steals and two assists. Fernanda Arambula contributed five goals, two steals and one assist while Kendra Gregory added two goals. Cailin Lechner had one goal, one steal and one assist while teammate Camilia Benitez had one goal and five steals. Alessandra Corrao had five steals while Monica Salcedo had one steal.

Otay Ranch defeated University City, 5-4, in a non-league game on Monday at the Loma Verde pool. Cornwell backstopped the victory with 16 goalie saves while Medina contributed two goals and three steals and Salcedo, Arambula and Corrao each scored one goal. Arambula led the Mustangs defensively with six steals.
