Montgomery, Chula Vista split South Bay League swim meet Phillip Brents | Fri, Mar 30 2012 03:04 PM

In a varsity-only swim meet that took only one hour and 20 minutes to complete Tuesday morning at the Parkway pool, the Chula Vista Spartans and Montgomery Aztecs each came up winners.

The Aztecs remained undefeated in South Bay League girls competition by capturing an 89-70 decision; the Spartans claimed a 50-46 edge in the boys meet.

Montgomery, which previously defeated San Ysidro and Southwest in league duals, took first-place finishes in six of the 11 events. The Aztecs set the tone in the meet by winning the 200-yard medley relay in 2:29 behind legs by Diana Gamboa, Yarithza Felix, Bridgette Gomez and Ocean Gray.

The same unit closed the meet by winning the 400 freestyle relay in 5:08.

Gomez captured two individual events besides swimming in the fast lane in the two relay events. She won the 50 freestyle in 30.07 and the 100 backstroke in 1:16.

Felix won the 200 freestyle in 3:10 while Gamboa came up victorious in the 100 butterfly in 1:24.
Senior Lidia Espinoza helped provide the highlights for the CV girls by recording first-place finishes in the 200 individual medley (2:29), 500 freestyle (5:43) and anchoring the winning 200 freestyle relay (2:10).

A three-time CIF qualifier, Espinoza won the IM (2:18.36) and 500 free (5:27.53) at last year’s Mesa League finals and remains undefeated in both events in the Spartans’ move to the South Bay League this season.

Joining Espinoza on the Spartans’ victorious 200 free relay squad were teammates Alyna Schlachter, Gaby Marina and Victoria Romero.

Schlachter also won the 100 freestyle (1:21).

In the boys meet, two events were not contested (200 IM and backstroke). Of the eight events that were swum, the teams split with four wins apiece.

For Chula Vista, Luis Flores won the 200 freestyle (2:24), 100 freestyle (1:05) and 500 freestyle (7:02) and also swam a leg on the Spartans’ victorious 200 freestyle relay (2:12).

Flores joined Jahaziel Valencia, Raul Ferreira and Jorge Zuniga on the 200 free relay team.

Montgomery captured first-place finishes in the 200 medley relay (2:28) and 400 free relay (5:11). Luis Baez also captured individual wins in the butterfly (1:31) and 100 breaststroke (1:32).
